Pats stay strong vs. No. 6 Eagles (09/24/03)

Jay County Roundup

Jay County’s tennis team didn’t expect to win. It did expect to continue to build on its strong play from the three 5-0 wins it strung together last week.

The Patriots (7-7) accomplished that goal, playing their best tennis of the year in a 7-0 loss to the No. 6 Delta Eagles and taking a couple of sets in the process.

Usually when the teams get together the goal is to get games, and even points against the always-tough Eagles. This team, No. 1 and 2 singles players Kurtis Hess and Kentaro Ohgo did more than that.

Both nearly came away with upset victories, each winning first sets by wide margins. They just couldn’t quite put the matches away.

Hess lost in three sets to Matt McKinney 2-6, 6-2, 7-5, and Ohgo dropped to Steve Hopkins 0-6, 6-4, 7-5. In other singles matches Derek Powell fell to Jared Burt 6-1, 6-1 and Travis Smith lost to Drew DeHaven 6-2, 6-0.

The No. 2 and 3 doubles teams also did some damage against Delta in two-set defeats. Chip Feazell and Adam Paxson dropped a 6-4, 6-2 decision to Billy Wogan and Ryan Mochal while Matt Peterson and Jeff Sims lost to Isaac Parris and Kua Lowgill 6-2, 6-4.

At No. 1 doubles Randy Evans and Tyler Rigby lost to Bryce Bow and Blain Keller 6-1, 6-0.

Jay County also lost in junior varsity action 5-0 to drop to 8-5-1 on the season.

Charlie Abbott played a close match in a 9-7 loss to Alex Whiteman at No. 2 singles, and Todd McCowan dropped to Jesse Anderson 8-5 at the No. 3 spot. Jason Crouch lost the other singles match 8-0 to Eric Taylor.

In doubles action Adam Arnold and Chad Miller went down to Geoff Shafer and Mike Wogan 8-2, and James Heare and Brady Michael dropped an 8-1 decision against Bret Taylor and Kory Mace.

The Patriots now have a week off before hosting the Bellmont Braves for senior night Wednesday, Oct. 1 at 4:30 p.m.
