A Portland business has been ranked among the fastest growing companies in the country.

Pennville Custom Cabinetry came in at number 4,837 among 5,000 companies.

The company was ranked by Inc. magazine.

New business

KJ's Pizza is now open in Redkey. The restaurant, located at 130 S. Meridian St., features "50s style soda fountain and ice cream parlor decor with vintage signage. Dine-in and carryout service is available. KJ's Pizza is owned by Jon and Kristy Rodeffer.

New representative

Don Garner has joined the First Bank of Berne Financial Services as an investment representative.

Garner has been in the banking industry for more than 15 years. He also is a registered representative with PrimeVest.

Meeting announcement

The East Central Indiana Human Resources Association will hold its September meeting on Wednesday, Sept. 12, with registration being held at 11:30 a.m. The event will be held at the Horizon Convention Center, 401 S. High St., Muncie. Topics for discussion will include policies, recruitment, diversity, training, certification, compensation and other subjects.

Lunch is $13 for members, $18 for guests and $6.50 for students. Checks can be made payable to ECIHRA. Reservations are required and must be made by Friday, Sept. 7. They can be made be e-mailing [email protected].

Trick or treat

The Portland Area Chamber of Commerce will again be holding Trick or Treat Night in downtown Portland on Halloween.

The event will be held from 5 to 7:30 p.m. Any businesses outside of the central business district may set up in the parking lot south of the Community Resource Center.

Cost for businesses to participate is $20. There will be a pumpkin carving and costume contest for participating businesses.

Joins business

A Fort recovery resident who is a licensed esthetician has joined a Fort Recovery business.

Ashley Alt, now works at Nature's Corner, 133 N. Wayne St. She offers basic, deep pore and back facials, waxing and body wraps.

She received her license from the Toledo Academy of Beauty.

Chamber outing

The Portland Area Chamber of Commerce is holding the Randy O. Poole Memorial Golf Outing on Sept. 8 at the Portland Golf Club.

Hole sponsorship is $175 for silver and $250 for gold.

Training seminar

Jody Fosnough, president and owner of Paraklatos Consulting LLC, Fort Wayne, will be the guest speaker at a training seminar called "Legally Hired, Now What?"

Topics covered will be how congressional laws and regulations are impacting employment and training, how to work within the Fair Labor Standards Act and the best small and medium places to wok in 2007.

Fosnough has a master's degree in human resources management from Purdue University. She has also worked as a consultant in manufacturing, health care and other sectors of private business.

Fosnough has spent the last three years advising other professionals and instructing at Indiana Purdue University in Fort Wayne.

The event is sponsored by the Portland Area Chamber of Commerce will be on Sept. 13 from 8 a.m. to noon. Cost is $50 for chamber members and $70 for others.

Wins award

A quilting business has one the first Berne Community Development Corporation's $5,000 business incentive award.

Masterpiece Quilting, Berne, which is owned and operated by Nancy Scott, won the award. The money will be used toward the purchase or lease of a business facility in targeted development areas in Berne.

"Masterpiece Quilting has a solid start, contributes well to the Berne community, and is looking to expand the business," Berne CDC president David Baumgartner said in a press release.

Attended conference

A bereavement specialist from State of the Heart Home Health and Hospice recently attended professional enrichment conferences. Patti Stahl, who serves the Coldwater, Ohio, and Portland areas, completed 30 hours of classroom education at a conference. She assists families in Jay County, and Mercer and Auglaize counties in Ohio.

Also, Marlene Black, who works with the Greenville, Ohio, office, attended The Dougy Center International Summer Institute. She assists families in Randolph County, and Darke and Preble counties in Ohio.
