Pennville science winners named (2/18/04)
Taking Note
Three fifth-grade students at Pennville Elemenatary School qualified for the regional competition to be held at Ball State University, Muncie, on Saturday, March 6.
Tyler Claycomb, son of Matt and Tonya, won for his project entitled Turn Off That Music; Desiree Blankenship, daughter of Shannon and Ginny Schlosser, won for her project Fountain in a Bottle; and Talir Ellis, daughter of Susan Ellis and Mike Ellis, whose project was entitled Singing Glasses.
The Science Fair was held Thursday, Feb. 12 at the school. Winners were honored the same night at the school and attendees were treated to pizza by the school’s PTO.
Class winners were: Kindergarten, Emily Jobe, daughter of Brian and Lisa, for Are You Eating the Five Food Group Way?; first grade, Michael Walter, son of Don and Laurel, How Hard Is a Soft Drink?; second grade, Tyler Geesaman, son of Harley and Carolynn, for Pointing North; third grade, Donnie Cosner, son of Don Cosner and Evelyn Paxson, for Burglar Alarm; fourth grade, Daphne Smith, daughter of Michael and Melissa, for How a Sewage System Works in the Country; and fifth grade, Tyler Claycomb, son of Matt and Tonya Claycomb, for Turn Off That Music.
ORATORICAL WINNERS
The Jay County Optimist Junior Oratorical Contests at several of the elementary schools were delayed because of missed school days. The county competition was originally slated for Monday but was postponed until Thursday at 6:30 p.m. so East Elementary and General Shanks Elementary could conduct competitions.
Representing East Elementary will be Erin Hunt and Ben Brandt
Hunt, a fifth grader, is the daughter of Michael and Jan Hunt. Brandt is a sixth grader and the son of Bill and Beth Brandt.
Sixth grader Lacey Randolph, the daughter of Jimmie and Jani Randolph, and sixth grader Josh Mills, the son of Steve and Julie Mills, were named as alternates in the school contest Monday.
Competing for General Shanks will be Michelle Landfair, the sixth-grade daughter of Kent and Linda Landfair, and Drew Houck, the fifth-grade son of Jack and Dora Houck.
Alternates for Shanks are sixth grader Kyla Baldwin, daughter of Bill and Laura Baldwin, and fifth grade student, Austin Mann, son of Shane and Stephanie Mann.
The countywide contest will be held at Pennville Elementary School.
DEAN’S LIST
Several area residents have been named to the fall semester dean’s at their respective colleges and universities.
Laura Timmerman, a junior at Bluffton College, Bluffton, Ohio, is the daughter of Michael and Karen Timmerman, Ridgeville; Cheryl Rust, daughter of Mark Rust, Portland, and Naomi Cook, Decaur, is a senior at Bluffton College; Cindy A. Grile, Portland, who is attending graduate school for education at Ball State University, Muncie; and Bradley C. Laux, Portland, Ivy Tech State College, Fort Wayne.
GRADUATE
Julie Tschannen, daughter of Ron and Bev Tschannen, Portland, recently graduated from the University of St. Francis, Fort Wayne. She is a 2001 graduate of Jay County High School and is employed as a registered nurse at Jay County Hospital, Portland.[[In-content Ad]]
