Two livestock facilities topped the list of building permits in August for Jay/Portland Building and Planning. The two operations combined for $480,000 of the total value of $715,900 for the month.
The first was a confined swine feeding building located at 5605 East 100 South, Portland. The building, owned by John and Mary Overman, will be valuded at an estimated $280,000.
The other is a cattle barn being replaced because of fire, owned by Jan Fokker of Dairy's Futures LLC, worth $200,000. The facility is to be located at North State Line Road between Ind. 67 and county road 600 North.

New clerk
Jennifer Zorn has been named the new immunization clerk for the Jay County Health Department. She is a lifetime Jay County resident and graduated from Jay County High School.
She is currently taking college classes at the John Jay Center for Learning.
Zorn has been employed part-time as an assistant registrar with the health department since 2000.
Informational meeting
Energize-ECI will be hosting an informational breakfast meeting on Friday, Sept. 21 from 7 to 9:30 a.m. at the Ball State Alumni Center, 2000 W. University Ave., Muncie.
The topic of discussion will be information about a new Web site for area job training opportunities.

Zachary "Zac" Sutton, son of Harold and Cindy Sutton, rural Portland, attended a two-day gem faceter's class at Mott Community College in Flint, Mich.
Faceting is the cutting of gems.
Health care forum
The Swiss Village Ethics Committee will hold a public forum discussing difficult health care decisions. There also will be a handbook and other materials available to help guide decision-making.
The forum will take place at 7p.m. on Thursday, Sept. 20, at the Swiss Village Auditorium, 1350 W. Main St., Berne.
Tyson stock tumbles
On Wednesday, stock prices for Tyson Foods Inc. fell 13 percent.
According to an article in the Wall Street Journal, high costs of grain were partly to blame.
The newspaper noted Richard Bond, the company's president and CEO, said there will be some changes in how Tyson conducts everyday business.
Some of those changes include having fewer people in management and eliminate some activities.

Franklin obtains company
Franklin Electric Company, based out of Bluffton, recently acquired the pump division of Monarch Industries of Winnipeg Canada.
Monarch's revenues in 2006 were approximately $30 million.
Franklin Electric Inc. is the world's largest builder of submersible electric motors.
Accreditation renewed
LifeStream Services has been approved for another four-year renewal of accreditation.
The company offers independent living solutions to senior citizens and people with disabilities.
There will be an open house to celebrate the recent re-accreditation. It will be held at Pilgrim Place, 1700 S. Pilgrim Blvd., Yorktown from 3:30 to 5 p.m. on Oct. 18.
Cardinal moving ahead
Cardinal Ethanol's Randolph County plant near Harrisville is showing signs of progress. Where there was once just concrete and dirt, now lies foundations and holding tanks. When the $150 million project is complete in 2009, it will be capable of producing 100 million gallons of ethanol a year.
The plant will be located about five miles east of Winchester, just north of Ind. 32.[[In-content Ad]]
