Petro leads Patriots past SW

PONETO — The Patriots scored 11 times in the final two innings on Monday. They had plenty of offense left for the Raiders.
Jay County High School’s softball team tallied seven runs in the first three innings Tuesday on the way to a 9-3 victory over host Southern Wells.
Katlin Petro, who homered in Monday’s loss to Class 4A No. 3 Huntington North, went 3-for-4 with four RBIs and two runs to lead the Patriots (2-4). Gabby Hart had two hits and two RBIs, Katie Aker added two hits and two runs and Chloe Steigerwalt scored twice.
Rachelle Jackson picked up her first win of the year for Jay County as she struck out nine batters. She allowed three runs on five hits and a walk.

Girls track dominates
RICHMOND — Malarie Houck, Ciera Barcus and Abigail Johnson each won two events Tuesday to lead the Jay County girls to an 83-38 victory over the Richmond Red Devils. Cade Price turned in a career-best jump in the boys’ 75-57 loss.
Houck won the 100-meter hurdles in 16.6 seconds and the 300 hurdles in 51.3, and Barcus was first at 5 feet in the high jump and 16 feet in the long jump. Abigail Johnson posted first-place times of 2 minutes, 30 seconds, in the 800 run and 6:01 in the 1,600 run.
Price won the high jump at 6 feet, 7 inches, a height that has finished in the top three at the state finals in each of the last three seasons. He was just 1 inch short of the JCHS record set by Brad Mock in 1985.
Dylan Cope won the 800 run in 2:12 and the 3,200 run in 11:26.

JV baseball wins
BERNE — Jay County’s junior varsity baseball team turned in a big sixth inning Tuesday as it rolled to a 16-6 victory over the host South Adams Starfires.
Chaz Carroll and Kyler Carvel each hit home runs while finishing with two hits and two runs apiece to lead the Patriots. Austin Beasley and Chandler Jacks also had two hits and two runs, and Lucas Hendee finished 3-for-5 with a run.
JCHS grabbed a 4-0 lead in the opening frame and blew the game open with eight runs in the sixth.
Hendee also earned the win as he struck out eight batters in three innings. He gave up two runs on two hits and three walks.
Homan leads EJMS
Taylor Homan picked up two victories Tuesday to lead the East Jay Middle School girls track team to a 71-29 win over visiting Muncie Northside. The boys team eked out a 51-49 victory.
Homan led an EJMS sweep of the high jump as she won at 4 feet, 7 inches, and was also first in 13.55 seconds in the 100-meter dash. Rebecca Corwin took the shot put at 24 feet, 10½ inches, Britlyn Dues won the 400 dash in 1:13 and Betsy Muhlenkamp was first in the 800 run in 3 minutes, 1.8 seconds.
Wes Smith was first in the 400 dash for the Chief boys in 1:10.5, Brandon McIntire took the 800 run in 3:01 and Luke Weaver won the 1,600 run in 6:06. Alex Lewis finished first in the high jump at 4 feet, 10 inches.
The girls B team won 80-15 behind two victories from Breea Liette, and the boys B team turned in a 57-28 win.[[In-content Ad]]
