PHS grad receives award (02/03/2009)
Taking Note
A graduate of Portland High School was recently named 2008 Person of the Year by The Star Press.
Donna (Shoemaker) Bookout, 76, Muncie, grew up in Plymouth and later moved to Portland. After graduating from Ball State University, she taught school on the West Coast and then returned to Portland to teach. She than taught in Indianapolis, Yorktown and Cowan.
After retiring from teaching, Bookout was education coordinator for Planned Parenthood of East Central Indiana and also involved in Healthy Mothers/Healthy Babies. She retired from that position at age 62, after nine years of service.
She than became active in Prevent Child Abuse of Delaware County, serving as vice-president, on the program committee and the board of directors.
Donna is involved with Retired Teachers of Delaware County, Youth Empowerment Group of Delaware County, Alpha Chi Omega Sorority, TEAMwork (Quality Living's Eliminating Poverty In the Community), Gethsemane United Methodist Church and United Methodist Women.
She and her husband Darl have three daughters, Gretchen Cheesman, Stephanie Sommer and Lorraine Tomlin and eight grandchildren.
After school special
The Jay County Public Library will have an after school special on Friday from 2:45 to 4 p.m. A snack will be provided, a story shared and a Valentine's Day craft or two will be completed.

Spelling Bee
Alaina Johnston was the winner and Aalliyah Valentin was the runner-up in the South Adams Middle School spelling bee.
Receives conputers
Jay County Public Library recently received a grant to provided three AWE Early Literacy Computers. The computers contain 20 educational software programs to help preschoolers learn to read and are available in Spanish.
Preschool Power Computer classes will be available this month to teach children and their parents how to use the computers.
Classes will be held Thursday at 11:15 a.m.; Wednesday, Feb. 11, at 6:15 p.m.; Thursday, Feb. 19, at 11:15 a.m.; Monday, Feb. 23, at 10:15 a.m.; and Saturday, Feb. 28, at 10 a.m.

Essay winners
Sen. Richard Lugar, Indiana Farm Bureau Inc. and Indiana Farm Bureau Insurance recently sponsored a youth essay contest with the theme "Working Our Way to Energy Independence."
The winner in District 4 was Trevor Homan, an eighth grade student from East Jay Middle School. He is the son of Tom and Kim Homan, Portland.
Homan received a $50 savings bond and will represent District 4 at the Indiana Farm Bureau Conference in Indianapolis on March 6 and 7.
Tax issues
Jay County Purdue Extension will sponsor a "Property Taxes Update" program on Tuesday, Feb. 10, at 7 p.m. at the Jay County Courthouse Auditorium.
Property tax issues will be discussed by Dr. Larry DeBoer of Purdue University.
Music classes
Arts Place in Portland is accepting applications for Music da Capo, an early introduction to the elements of music for infants, toddlers, preschoolers and their caregivers. Music da Capo will be taught by Sheron McClung and will teach fun songs, simple musical instruments and movement.

The Jay School Corporation will have kindergarten round-up in April to register children who plan to attend kindergarten in the fall. Children must be five years old by Aug. 1 and need a certified birth certificate and immunization record.
Round-ups will be held April 1 at General Shanks Elementary; April 2 at Judge Haynes Elementary; April 3 at Bloomfield Elementary; April 7 at Redkey Elementary; April 8 at Westlawn and Pennville Elementary; and April 9 at East Elementary. All sessions begin at 8:30 a.m. and will last about two hours.

Dean's list
Amanda "Mandee" (Grose) Mikulski, recently made the dean's list at Columbia College in Oak Harbor, Wash. She has been attending Columbia College since October of 2007. Mandee also completed a year at the University of Southern Indiana in Evansville.
Mandee is a 2005 graduate of Jay County High School and the daughter of Harley and Carolynn Geesaman. She is a senior majoring in marketing and communications.[[In-content Ad]]
