Pitching, defense lift Stars over New Haven (04/04/08)

South Adams roundup

NEW HAVEN - Dean Stahly said he felt his team would need to count on pitching and defense early in the year. Thursday evening, that theory played out.

Daniel Bollenbacher and Travis Hunt combined to allow just a run and five hits as Stahly's South Adams High School baseball team edged the host New Haven Bulldogs 2-1.

Bollenbacher struck out 10 batters as he tossed 4 2/3 innings, giving up the long New Haven run in the fourth as SAHS fell behind 1-0. But the Starfires bounced back with a run in the fifth to tie the game, and scored the game winner in the top of the seventh.

Hunt gave up just two hits in 2 1/3 scoreless innings of relief. He and Caleb Armenta each finished with a single and an RBI. Bollenbacher and Jordan Steiner had a hit and a run apiece.

Stars top Winchester

BERNE - Nathan Rupp, Kinsey Lengerich, Kylie Cisney and Trent Moore each won a pair of events Thursday to lead the South Adams track teams to victories over the visiting Winchester Golden Falcons.

The boys team scored an 81-41 win, and the girls posted a 76-45 triumph.

Rupp, the lone returning regional qualifier for the Starfire boys, was first in the 1,600 run in 5-minutes, 2 seconds and the 3,200 run at 10:53. Moore took the top spot in the 200 dash in 23.9 and the shot put with a distance of 42 feet, 1 inch.

Lengerich, who missed most of 2007 with injuries, finished first with a high jump of 4 feet, 6 inches and a time of 29.8 in the 200 dash. Cisney, a freshman, won the 100 hurdles in 14.6 and the 300 hurdles at 56.1.

Other victories for the Starfires came from John Gresla (discus), Sam Amstutz (long jump) and Brian Lehman (800 run) for the boys, and Jaci Liechty (100 dash), Maddie Moore (1,600 run) and Allison Beitler (3,200 run).

SA finished Falcons in 5

WINCHESTER - Katrina Hawkins led the South Adams softball team from her No. 9 spot in the order, and the pitching duo of Amber Melick and Ashton Morgan tossed a one-hitter in an 11-0 victory Thursday over the Winchester Golden Falcons.

Hawkins caught fire at the bottom of the order, going 2-for-2 with a double a run and three RBIs. Jordan Lehman added a double and three runs for the Starfires (1-0), and Karen Bollenbacher finished with a single and three runs.

Melick, who won 14 games a year ago, struck out four batters while walking just one in three hitless innings. Morgan gave up one hit in two innings while recording all of her six outs on strikeouts.[[In-content Ad]]
