POET plants reduce water use
POET Biorefining has eliminated wastewater discharge at some of its plants after developing a water recovery system earlier this year.
The ethanol producer is using a new water filtering and recycling system and has saved one plant and the tower more than 108,000 gallons per day.
The new method has reduced the amount of water needed to produce a gallon of ethanol from 3 gallons to 2 gallons.
The system should allow POET to cut water consumption by 22 percent, saving about 1 billion gallons of water over the next five years.
