Schwieterman to play
Fort Recovery High School graduate Olivia Schwieterman will play Saturday in the inaugural PostYourT.org Ohio vs. Indiana All-Star basketball game.
Schwieterman, who graduated in May, will play for the Ohio squad in the girls game at noon Saturday at East Jay Middle School. The boys game will follow at 2 p.m.
During her senior season, Schwieterman averaged 7.5 points per game and led the Indians with 65 assists. The point guard was also a member of the 2010-11 Tribe squad that won sectional, district and regional titles on the way to the state final four.
Vote on basketball?
FORT WAYNE — The Fort Wayne News Sentinel reported this morning that Indiana Sen. Jean Leising is exploring the possibility of putting the single-class vs. multi-class basketball tournament question to a state vote.
Leising (R-Oldenburg) said she will talk with her party leadership and legal council about making the issue a statewide referendum. The earliest such a measure could appear on the ballot is 2016.
The move comes just a week after the IHSAA released a study following a series of town hall meetings to discuss the issue.
At those meetings, members of the public voted in favor of a single-class system for the state tournament by a 68-to-32-percent margin. However, the state’s athletic directors (79 percent), principals (77 percent), athletes (72 percent) and coaches (55 percent) all voted in favor of keeping the current multi-class system, which was instituted in 1998.[[In-content Ad]]
