Pool party set for goal reachers (07/13/07)

Taking note

A pool party will be held Saturday, July 21, at 5:30 p.m. at Portland Pool for children and teens who reached their goal in the summer reading program at Jay County Public Library. Parents may also swim.

Another party for teen-agers who reached their goal will be Tuesday, July 24, from 7 to 8 p.m. at JCPL. For more information or to register, call the library at (260) 726-7890.

Annual picnic

The Jay County Historical Society will have its annual picnic on Tuesday, July 17, at 6:30 p.m. at the J.C. Historical Museum. Drinks and table service will be furnished.



NCGLNAC workshops

The National Center for Great Lakes Native American Culture, Inc., will sponsor Great Lakes Native American Arts and Culture Workshops in August.

The workshops will be held in the Women's Building at Jay County Fairgrounds, Monday, Aug. 6 through Friday, Aug. 10.

Workshops will be offered in sterling silver work; outdoor cooking; fingerweaving; flintknapping; pit-fired pottery; netted weave work beading (also available in an advanced class); story painting on hides; cedar boxes; braintanning; rawhide drums; antler carving; shoulder or bandolier bag; hand-carved wooden ceremonial bowl and hand-carved wooden ceremonial soup spoon-ladle. Classes are also available for children ages six to 14.

Sheep show winners

Pennville Legion Lions Fair recently held its sheep show.

Dustin Snyder won grand champion wether and Travis Garringer won reserve grand champion wether. Both winners are from Jay County.

Shantel Short from Randolph County won grand champion ewe and Travis Homan from Jay County won reserve grand champion ewe.

Winning the senior showmanship award was Dustin Snyder; winning the junior showmanship award was Kyle Garringer from Jay County; and beginning showmanship was awarded to Ashley Tehaar from Wayne County.

Class reunion

The 1967 class of South Adams High School will celebrate its 40th reunion on Saturday, July 28, at 6:30 p.m. with a dinner at the Back 40 Junction Restaurant in Decatur.

Contestants needed

Bryant Loblolly Days committee is looking for prince and princess contestants, ages five to eight, to be chosen by a penny pitch.

Anyone interested may send their name, address, parents names and two photos to Larry's Garage in Bryant. The deadline is Aug. 1.

Glass show

Minnetrista Cultural Center of Muncie will feature "Sand and Fire: A Juried Glass Show" September 1 through October 1.

Entries are being accepted through July 18 and can include torchwork, mosaics, etched, blown, fused, cast and stained glass. Work will be judged in vessels, jewelry, two-dimensional and three dimensional work.

Scholarship deadline

The deadline for the Lewis C. Bose Scholarship for Educational Leadership is July 31.

The $2,000 scholarship is awarded to an Indiana educator who has been accepted into and will attend an advanced degree program for education administration in 2007-08.
