Taking Note
Portland native Susan Schenck has written the book The Live Food Factor. The book explains how eating raw foods can promote better health, create more energy and help with weight loss.
Schenck is the daughter of the late Dr. Schenck who had a practice in Portland for many years. She is a licensed acupuncturist, with a master's degree in applied linguistics and a bachelor's degree in education from Indiana University.

4-H enrollment
The Purdue Extension Office is offering two ways to enroll in Jay County 4-H. Enrollment forms are available Monday through Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. at the office at 504 W. Arch St. in Portland or online enrollment is available at www.ces.purdue.edu/jay/.
The enrollment deadline is Friday, Feb. 6. For more information, call Cara Kobza at (260) 726-4707.
Open house
Cara Kobza, 4-H youth educator for Purdue Extension, will have a 4-H open house on Tuesday from 5:30 to 7 p.m. at the 4-H building at the Jay County Fairgrounds.
Students in kindergarten through 12 grade and their families are invited to attend the event which will include enrollment and a meeting with leaders.

Art competition
Jacquelin Hersberger, a fifth grade student at Deerfield Elementary was selected as one of the top 12 contestants in the state in the Elementary School Commemorative Stamp Competition. She will participate in a ceremony on Feb. 12 at the State House and receive $200.
Hersberger's artwork depicted Abraham Lincoln's life in Indiana, where he lived from 1816 until 1830.

These area students made the dean's list for the fall quarter of 2008 at Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology in Terre Haute.
Jessica Muhlenkamp, the daughter of Allen and Theresa Muhlenkamp, Portland. She is majoring in civil engineering.
Jacob Schmidt, the son of Gary and Diane Schmidt, Portland. He is majoring in software engineering.
Ian Thomas, the son of Randy and Jo Thomas, Pennville. He is majoring in computer engineering.
