Portland native shaken by quake (08/01/2008)
Taking Note
A former Portland resident made national news earlier this week when she was quoted in a story in The Los Angeles Times on Wednesday.
Julie (Bubp) Hummel moved to California a year ago and was working at the Chino Hills Branch Library on Tuesday when the 5.4 earthquake shook Los Angeles.
Hummel, 24, who is the young adult specialist and volunteer coordinator at the library, said by the time she realized what was happening she didn't even have time to run for shelter. "It was already over," she was quoted as saying in the Los Angeles Times.
She received calls from her mother, brother, a friend and "The Today Show."
"All of my family called to make sure I'm alive, which is kind of funny," she said. "I told them I'm fine. ... They think it's really cool I lived through it."
Not a single book of the library's 10,000 fell from the shelves during the quake and Hummel returned to her work .
