Portland resident learns in Australia (6/17/03)
Taking Note
Portland resident Tracey Marie Minnich recently participated in the National Youth Leadership Forum International Mission on Medicine in Australia.
While there, Minnich had the opportunity — along with 80 other students interested in pursuing medicine — to experience the study and practice of medicine with surgeons, physicians, researchers, scientists and medical educators in some of Australia’s most prestigious medical institutions
While there she also visited the Great Barrier Reef and the rainforests of North Queensland, to learn how plants unique to this environment are medically beneficial.
Minnich will be a junior at Indiana University in the fall and is pursuing a career in medicine.
RECEIVES FELLOWSHIP
Michael Kellermeyer, a sophomore at South Adams High School, was recently selected as the recipient of the Leah M. Steed Memorial Violin Fellowship at Arts Place Inc.
He is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Grant Kellermeyer and Diana Kellermeyer of Berne.
Kellermeyer currently studies violin at Arts Place with instructor T.J. Hull. He also plays violin in the South Adams Orchestra, French horn in the band and enjoys music composition.
The Leah M. Steed Fellowship is awarded each year to an individual who demonstrates promise as a developing musician and violinist by the Arts Place Inc. Board of Directors. The award entitles Kellermeyer to use the Steed violin and bow for one year. The violin was made during the last half of the 19th century in Bohemia, and the bow was made in Germany circa 1910.
Steed was a teacher, orchestral director, accompanist and solo violinist. She was a pupil of Gustav Stephan.
Originally from Portland, she performed internationally on the violin. She was a radio artist for the Dallas News, Ft. Worth Star Telegram, Ft. Worth Record and the Detroit Free Press.
Her teaching career took her from Lake Charles High School in Louisiana to Trinity University, Waxahachie and Presbyterian College, both in Texas.
Steed died at age 29, and her brother maintained her violin throughout his life. It was later bequeathed to Arts Place.
SCHOLARSHIP
Steve Neargarder, a 2003 graduate of Jay County High School, was recently awarded the Sprint Community Relation Team Scholarship of $500.
While at JCHS, Neargarder participated in the JCHS Swing Choir and is involved in church activities.
He plans to attend the University of Northwestern Ohio.
DEAN’S LIST
Melissa Lambert, daughter of Steve and Rhonda Lambert, Portland, was recently named to the spring semester dean’s list at Indiana University East, Richmond, where she is studying elementary education.
