DUNKIRK - The Portland bats were popping Saturday.
Portland's 8-and-younger All-Star baseball team pounded its way through the Dunkirk Junior League All-Star Tournament Saturday, winning the championship with three double-digit victories. The team defeated Dunkirk 14-4, Wes-Del 27-13 and Redkey 20-9 en route to the title.
A pair of Portland players each finished with perfect tournaments. Caleb Kunkle and Jason Schlosser both went 4-for-4 in every game, and each hit a home run in the win over Wes-Del.
Levi Long smacked three home runs in the tournament, two against Wes-Del and one in the title victory over Redkey. He also hit for the cycle in the tournament's final game.
Caleb Manor and Kyler Hudson each added 11 hits in the tournament.
J-R drops a pair
KOKOMO - The Jay-Randolph American Legion baseball team managed just a single run Sunday in dropping a double-header to Kokomo. The team lost 7-0 in the opener and 11-1 in five innings in game two.
Jay-Randolph managed just two hits in the opening defeat, one each from Justin Schwieterman and Eric Moreland. Luke Morrison allowed seven runs on five hits and two walks in the defeat.
Andy Hughes, a Jay County High School graduate, took the defeat in game two. He gave up nine runs on six hits and five walks.
Moreland singled and scored the only run of the day for J-R, and Luke Morrison and JCHS senior Thomas McCowan each had two hits. Tony McCowan, a JCHS graduate, also had a hit.

DUNKIRK - A group of Jay County residents earned the 13-16-year-old championship in Dunkirk's Fourth of July 3-on-3 basketball tournament.
Dunkirk's Nathaniel Brown joined Josh Beaty, Redkey, and Caden Price and Brock McFarland, both of Portland, to take the 13-16-year-old title.
Champions in the 10-and-younger division were Spencer Evans, Dunkirk, Reed Borgmann, Eaton, Riley Neal, Yorktown, and Sam Williams, Muncie. Winners in the 17-and-older division were Tim Richie, Dunkirk, and Chad Paskwiecz, Nick Paskwiecz and Jason Jamerson, all of Muncie.[[In-content Ad]]
