Pregnancy center to have Ladies' Night Out

The Pregnancy Care Center will sponsor a Ladies' Night Out on Tuesday, Oct. 6, at Portland Lions Civic Center, 307 East 100 North, Portland.

Dinner will begin at 6:30 p.m. The evening will include testimonies from clients, entertainment, a silent auction and door prizes.

Extension programs

The Purdue Cooperative Extension Service and Jay County Extension Homemakers are teaming to offer a series of free programs on Wednesday, October 7. Those attending will need to bring their own lunch.

The programs will be held at Jay County Public Library. At 10 a.m. Robin Williams, Madison County extension educator, will present "Interpersonal Communication."

At 11 a.m. Kristi Henry, Jay and Blackford County extension educator, will present "Healthy Holidays."

At 12:30 p.m. Robin Williams will present "Connecting To Youth."

Students of month

West Jay Middle School in Dunkirk recently named its Students of the Month for September.

In sixth grade was Josh Vaughn, the son of Terry and Jennifer Vaughn.

In seventh grade was Alexis Murrell, the daughter of John and Rita Murrell.

In eighth grade was Rylee Clemmons, the daughter of David and Heather Clemmons.

Chancellor Milligan has recently enrolled at Earlham College in Richmond. He is the son of Angela Davidson and David Milligan, both of Portland.

Lapsits

A program for new moms and their babies, up to 24 months, to learn more about nutrition, health and child skills will be held in Geneva. Babies will also be introduced to stories, rhymes and songs that can be used to increase their mental skills and coordination.

The program Baby Lapsit will begin Tuesday at 6 p.m. at Geneva Library. To register, call the library at (260) 368-7270 or visit www.apls.lib.in.us.

FFA finalist

Dan Brackman has been selected as a national finalist by the National FFA Organization for the National FFA Proficiency award in Diversified Livestock Production-Placement. A member of the Fort Recovery FFA Chapter, he became eligible for the award after winning the Ohio State FFA competition earlier this year.

The award recognizes outstanding achievement in agri-business through establishment of a business, working for an existing company or otherwise gaining hands on career experience. Dan worked at Meiring Poultry and Fish Farm and Brackman Hog Farm.

The winner will be announced at the 82nd FFA National FFA Convention in Indianapolis October 19 to 24. As one of four finalists, Dan will receive a plaque and $500. The winner will receive an additional $500.

Dan is the son of Doris Brackman-Good, Fort Recovery.

Other Fort FFA members who will attend the convention include Lindsey Fortkamp, Valerie Fortkamp, Tyler Huelskamp, Jenessa Nietfeld and Jeremy Siegrist.

Dan and the other five attending will receive the American FFA Degree, the highest degree a member can receive. To earn the degree, members needed to work more than 2,250 hours and earn or invest $7,500 in a Supervised Agricultural Experience Program.

Volunteers

The Hoosier Heartland Chapter of the American Red Cross held a blood drive on Sept. 11 in Portland with 109 people donating. A list of donors was published in the Sept. 16 issue of The Commercial Review. Volunteering that day were Portland Morning Optimists, Mary Boozier, Gladys Kaderly, Sue Schoenlein, Gertrude Metz, Shirley Herrin, Janet Green, Nell Hampson, Merylin Strohl, Fannie Landfair, Jo Duke, Nellie Sager, Bonnie Bisel, Frances Duke, Norma Cash, Pam Hart, Emily Steveson, Sara Rhodehamel, Rogers Durham, Shirley Evans, the Rev. Joe Hines, Charlie Pogue, Dick Manor, Dick Rines and Betty Sue Manor.

Donating food items and supplies were McDonald's, SerTech Heating & A/C, WalMart, Pennville Legion Auxiliary, Penn 50 Home Extension Club, Westchester United Methodist Women and Portland Loyal Order of the Moose.

Reunion

The South Adams High School class of 1999 will have its 10-year reunion on Saturday, Oct. 24, from 6 to 11 p.m. at the Grey Goose Golf Club, 1098 West 500 North in Decatur.
