Prescott first at River Downs (06/28/05)

Local roundup

CINCINNATI — Doubling up at two Midwest tracks meant double riding championships this spring for jockey Rodney Prescott.

Prescott, a Jay County native who has been riding professionally since 1994, wrapped up the riding title Saturday in the spring meet at River Downs.

It was his second in a week, as he also finished as the top rider in the spring meet at Indiana Downs near Shelbyville. That meet concluded June 18.

Prescott, who has ridden more races this year than any other top-level jockey, is currently No. 2 in the nation in victories for 2005 with 195. He trails Russell Baze by just 10 wins. Baze is currently sidelined with a broken collarbone.

Through almost six months, Prescott’s mounts have earned nearly $1.8 million. Most analysts say the earnings of jockeys are about seven percent of the total purse.

Through Monday, Prescott had ridden in 1,052 races so far this year. Among jockeys in the top 100 in wins nationally, the next most-active rider has ridden in 863 races.

At River Downs, which ended one meet Saturday and began another on Sunday, Prescott had 68 wins, 35 seconds and 44 thirds in 275 starts. His win total was three more than Perry Ouzts.

For more than two months, Prescott raced at both River Downs and Indiana Downs, competing first at the Cincinnati track and then driving west to Shelbyville for night racing.

Prescott was dominant at Shelbyville, also scoring 68 wins to easily top Jose J. Delgado’s total of 50. At Indiana Downs, Prescott also led in seconds and thirds.

Hess wins tourney

Kurtis Hess, who won a wrestling tournament in Cincinnati just a few weeks ago, took another tournament title June 24. He just did it in a different sport.

Hess was the champion in the 19-and-younger division at Delta coach Tim Cleland’s tennis camp.[[In-content Ad]]
