Price, Claytor lead EJ (10/17/2008)

Cade Price and Ryan Claytor each passed the 1,000-yard rushing mark Thursday to lead the East Jay Middle School football teams to victory.

Price racked up 165 yards on 10 carries in a 52-32 win for the eighth grade team over Hartford City. Claytor ran 12 times for 126 yards as the seventh grade team won 12-0.

Along with the rushing effort, Price added 157 receiving and return yards. He scored on runs of 11, 48 and 51 yards, a 7-yard reception from Brock McFarland and a punt return. McFarland added three rushing touchdowns and five tackles for the Chiefs (8-1), and Cody Bellis also made five tackles.

Claytor scored both TDs for the EJMS seventh graders (8-1) on runs of 2 and 65 yards. He and Andrew Eley each made six tackles.

Harding tops Stars

FORT WAYNE - South Adams High School's volleyball team lost 25-10, 25-16, 25-9 Thursday to the Harding Hawks.

The loss dropped the Starfires to 3-22 on the season.

SAHS won the junior varsity match, 25-16, 25-10.

Jones is new SA coach

BERNE - The Starfires have another new coach.

Two weeks after Rex Lawrence resigned as the South Adams High School girls basketball coach without having coached a game, Kip Jones was selected to take over the program. Doug Beall coached SAHS for the last four seasons, going 4-16 in 2007-08 and 12-67 overall, before moving to the boys program as an assistant coach this season.

Jones was an assistant girls basketball coach at Bellmont, his alma mater, last season. He has also coached at Garrett and Dwenger, as well as Indiana Tech.

He played professionally in Hong Kong and Turkey for three seasons following a career that included two Big Ten championships at Purdue. He was an Indiana All-Star, a McDonald's All American and the runner-up for Indiana's Mr. Basketball Award during his senior season.

Miles wins three

MUNCIE - Courtney Miles won three events Saturday as Gym City Gymnastics competed at the Cardinal Classic hosted by Ball State University.

Miles scored an 8.8 on the Level 6 vault to finish in first place. She also earned wins on the floor exercise (8.6) and balance beam (8.5).

Lizzy Schoenlein also earned a win, taking first in the Level 7 floor with a 9.3. Katie Snyder was second on the Level 8 vault with an 8.9.

Top efforts from other gymnasts also came on the vault as Halle Hill scored an 8.9 in her first career meet and Riley Leavell had a career-best 8.7.

All five gymnasts scored well enough to qualify for the state meet.[[In-content Ad]]
