Publications set for launch (03/18/06)
Business roundup
Two new publications will be launched by the Graphic Printing Co. this year in an effort to reach a growing audience of visitors to Portland.
“We believe that the big challenge for Jay County businesses in the next few years is figuring out how to capitalize on the opportunities presented by XPLEX and the increased programming at the Jay Community Center,” said Jack Ronald, president of Graphic Printing and editor and publisher of The Commercial Review.
“As XPLEX continues to build its schedule of events and with the planned construction of hundreds of new motel rooms, a new audience is developing beyond the scope of the traditional daily newspaper,” Ronald said.
“Our goal is to deliver that new audience to advertisers through two new publications,” he added.
Ronald said the first of the new publications — Xtreme Xpress — will make its debut in late April with the season-opening weekend at XPLEX Extreme Competition Park.
Xtreme Xpress will be an event-based newspaper, distributed free to those attending events such as motocross and UROC competitions.
A tabloid-format newspaper, it will feature articles and information specific to each particular XPLEX event.
“I believe that when it hits its stride XPLEX will be drawing tens of thousands of visitors to the community on a regular basis,” Ronald said. “Currently, there’s no way for local businesses to reach that temporary, interest-based audience. Xtreme Xpress will fill that gap.”
He estimated that about 11 editions of Xtreme Xpress will be produced in 2006. That number may rise depending upon the XPLEX event schedule. Total press run for Xtreme Xpress has yet to be determined.
The second new publication — Go — will be launched this fall, depending upon construction schedules for the planned Microtels and Holiday Inn Express.
A glossy, magazine-style publication, Go will be a visitors’ guide featuring a directory of local attractions, a calendar of local events, and a comprehensive set of maps. It’s expected that Go will be bi-monthly in 2006. It may become a quarterly in 2007, though that decision has not yet been made, Ronald said.
Go will be available to visitors in local motel rooms, and there will be countertop distribution as well.
“The planned motels provided the spark behind Go,” Ronald said. “But I think it will be great for visitors to the Jay Community Center’s busy schedule of AAU events on the weekend. Right now, those visitors are coming, but the community isn’t doing a great job marketing itself to them.”
Prototypes of the two new publications have been developed and will be on display at Expo this weekend. Stacy Lingo, who joined the Graphic Printing Co. in January, is the advertising representative for both Xtreme Xpress and Go.
In addition to her sales duties for the Graphic’s commercial printing business, Lingo has been deeply involved in developing the two new products, Ronald said.
