Pyle wins scouting award (5/24/03)
Taking note
A Portland resident was honored Thursday, April 24, at the 2003 Annual Wapehani Girl Scout Council Meeting and Dinner with the highest award given to a Girl Scout.
Sara Pyle, daughter of Gary and Cindi Pyle, received the Senior Image Award. The Image Award is given to a Scout who has exemplified the values of scouting in her everyday life.
During her years in Scouting, Sara has received many awards and is involved in many school and community activities.
A senior at Jay County High School, she was awarded the Cadette Image Award in 1998; was a Cadette Program Aid Training Bar Recipient; and was the Jay County Top Cookie Seller in 1991 and 1992.
She has also held the following positions within the Girl Scout Council since being in Girl Scouts: Jay County Day Camp PA; Jay County Association Alternate Delegate, 2001-02; Jay County Association Delegate, 2002-03; president and vice president of her troop, Troop 812, for the past two years.
At the high school she is the French Club president; has been a member of the Jay County High School Drama Club for four years; is a member of the Internation Thespian Troupe No. 543; has been a four-year member of the Student Exchange Club; hosted a foriegn exchange student in 2002-03; was the first place recipient of an essay contest sponsored by a local corporation, which paid all expenses for a three-week visit to Japan in 2002; has been a Habitat for Humanity volunteer for two years; and is a member of Fairview United Methodist Church, where she is active in the youth group and fund raising campaigns.
TEACHER OF THE YEAR
Randy Ware, a Portland native, was recently named Teacher of the Year in Yuma County, Colo., where he is a band director at Wray High School in Wray, Colo.
Ware is the son of Jay Ware and the late Pauline Ware former co-owners of Pauline’s Dress Shop in Portland. He was a 1963 graduate of Portland High School and a 1969 graduate of Indiana University.
HONOR SOCIETY
Libby Weaver, Portland, was recently named to the Mortar Board and Omicron Delta Kappa Honor Societies at Wittenberg University, Springfield, Ohio, where she is a junior.
She was also selected as a member of Chi Alpha Sigma, a national college athletic honor society. While at Wittenberg, she is studying music. She is a member of Residence Hall Association, Kappa Delta sorority, Student Senate, Pick and Pen, junior service honor society, and Just Eve, a female a capella group. Sports she participated in were cross country, track and field, and swimming.
She is the daughter of Rob and Mindy Weaver, Portland.
ALZHEIMER’S EDUCATION
An Alzheimer’s Disease education program will be held at the Jay County Hospital on Tuesday, June 17, from 6:30 to 8 p.m.
The program is for individuals and families dealing with Alzheimer’s and other related dementias to provide basic information all caregivers need. Participants will learn about the disease and it’s progression, effective caregiving tips, community resources and services available. Also, information about legal and financial concerns regarding the disease will be provided.
