'Quilt Lady' exceeds goal

Taking Note

A local woman who set a goal in 1993 to be reached by her 80th birthday has accomplished that feat.

Catherine Bennett, 121 S. Munson Ave., Portland, will turn 80 on Saturday, March 6. Her goal was to make 2,500 quilts for a program called At Risk Baby Crib (ABC) Quilts, which she learned of 11 years ago while attending a meeting with the Jay County Hospital Prime Time Club. Bennett completed quilt No. 2,500 in October. Since then she has completed almost another 100 39 inch by 39 inch baby quilts.

In celebration of her birthday and her accomplishment, her family is hosting an open house/card shower on Saturday, March 6, from 2 to 5 p.m. at the New Life Ministries Building located at 215 S. Helen St., Portland.

Family and friends are invited to attend with a request of no gifts other than friendship or a card.
