Radio club to host field day (6/22/05)

The Jay County Amateur Radio Club will be part of a world wide field day weekend for ham radio operators on Saturday and Sunday.
The local event will take place on Robert Avey’s farm at 2371 West 300 North in Portland. Emergency power from batteries or generators will be used by Jay County ham operators to transmit around the world using several homemade antennas.
Club members, along with president Jeff Landers, would like to invite the public to visit the event and learn more about amateur radio and computer communication working together.
Senior program
Amos B. Schwartz will present a program at South Adams Senior Center on Thursday at 7 p.m. His company has completed over 200 state restoration projects, including covered bridges and restored barns in Indiana, Ohio and Kentucky. He will show a slide presentation of some of his projects.
The public is welcome and admission is free.
Garden tour
The Preservation Society of Union City, Indiana-Ohio, will present its 6th Annual Garden Tour on Saturday and Sunday from 1 to 5 p.m. There are seven gardens to tour featuring woodsy settings, city gardens, ponds and fountains.
Tickets are $7 and may be purchased at the Union City Antique Mall, 201 N. Columbia St. or at the Chamber of Commerce office, 105 N. Columbia St., both in Union City. For more information, call (765) 964-3341 or (765) 964-4683.
Attends seminar
Jay County High School student Scott Walker recently attended the Indiana Hugh O’Brian Youth (HOBY) Leadership Seminar at Butler University.
HOBY Leadership Seminars bring together a select group of high school sophomores to interact with groups of distinguished leaders in business, government, education and the professions to discuss present and future issues. Participants are then challenged to perform at least 100 hours of community service within the next 12 months.
Walker was also chosen as the alternate to attend the World Leadership Conference.
Receives degree
Danielle S. Moser, Portland, recently received a bachelor’s degree in film and television, cum laude, from Boston University.
Dean’s list
Amber Jewell Simos, Redkey, has been named to the National Dean’s List for the spring semester of 2004-2005 for maintaining at least a 3.5 grade point average at Indiana Wesleyan University.
Cody Cramer has made the dean’s list at Taylor University in Upland for the 2005 spring semester. He graduated from South Adams High School and is a sophomore majoring in psychology.
He is the son of Dave Cramer, Portland, and Cinda Cramer, Decatur.
Covered Bridge Festival
The Moscow Covered Bridge Festival will be held Friday, Saturday and Sunday. Moscow. is located on interstate 74 east, exit 119, on state road 244 east. Admission is free. For more information, call (765) 629-2892 or (317) 634-9406 or visit www.moscowfestival.org.
The Jay County Cancer Society 2005 Walk Against Cancer will be held on Saturday, June 25.
The annual event will take place, rain or shine, at the Jay County High School track with a car show from 4 to 7:30 p.m. There will also be free kids activities, including a moon walk, from 4 to 7 p.m.
“A Healthy Way of Life” cooking demonstration will be at 4:30 p.m. and the survivors dinner will be at 5 p.m. Reservations for the dinner are closed.
The walk around the track starts at 6 p.m. and a luminary ceremony begins at 8:15 p.m.
All proceeds collected will benefit Jay County cancer patients for expenses that are not covered by insurance. The Jay County Cancer Society helped 86 patients with financial needs in 2004.
