Rangers, Redskins stand in Fort's way (10/13/03)

Fort Recovery Roundup

The Fort Recovery volleyball team will have a warm-up match. It’s a good thing, because the Tribe will need to be hot when it steps on the court for match No. 2.

The Indians (13-7) line up against the New Knoxville Rangers (4-16) in the first round of the Division IV New Bremen Sectional. The brackets for the tournament were released Sunday.

Fort Recovery will open against the Rangers at 1 p.m. with a win putting them back on the biggest stage of all.

The Indians would meet the top-ranked St. Henry Redskins (21-1) in the second round of the tournament. The Tribe, which was 14th in the most recent state poll voting, lost to St. Henry in a tremendously tight match last week 17-15, 16-14.

In the other first-round match the New Bremen Cardinals (12-9) will play the Marion Local Flyers 20 minutes after the conclusion for the Fort Recovery/New Bremen match. Marion Local (15-6) was 13th in the voting in the most recent state poll.

The winner of that match will play the Division IV No. 2 Minster Wildcats (19-1) in the second round.

The two surviving teams will play in district semifinal action Tuesday, Oct. 21 at New Bremen at 7 p.m.

Junior varsity

Fort Recovery’s junior varsity team just ran out of gas by the end.

The Indians (15-4) made it to the final round, and forced a third game. But, they couldn’t put a point on the board in that deciding game in a 15-5, 10-15, 15-0 loss to the Minster Wildcats in the championship game of the Minster Junior Varsity Volleyball Invitational Saturday.

In other matches, Fort Recovery rallied for a 4-15, 15-5, 15-8 win over New Bremen, and topped Spencerville 15-5, 15-11.

Ciera Rammel had a solid day for the tribe from her setter position. She had seven assists, six points and one kill against Spencerville, and 11 assists, eight points and three kills in the loss to Minster.

Vicki Roessner was also impressive against Spencerville, matching Rammel with six points. She added five kills and a pair of blocks.

Julie Link had 13 digs and nine kills against New Bremen.

Freshmen

The Fort Recovery freshman volleyball team concluded its season at the Parkway Invitational Saturday with a runner-up finish.

The Tribe (17-3) lost to the St. Henry Redskins in the tournament finals 15-7, 15-3. On the way to the championship match the Indians topped Botkins 15-1, 15-10 and New Bremen 15-8, 15-8.

Holly Stein played big in the final two matches, racking up 11 sets and nine points against New Bremen. She also had 15 sets, four kills and two points versus St. Henry.

Abby Niekamp nearly matched her as they shared the setting duties, finishing with 11 and 14 sets against New Bremen and St. Henry respectively. She led the team with eight sets against Botkins to go along with two points and one block.

Junior high

Fort Recovery’s eighth grade volleyball team dropped out of the Midwest Athletic Conference tournament early, ending its season with a 15-10, 15-9 first-round loss against the Parkway Panthers.

Ashley Grube paced the Indians (7-8) with eight kills and two blocks. Kim Willmann paced the team with seven points, and Heather Schmackers had 15 sets.
