Laura Castillo scored three times.

Pazia Speed and Brittany Mann each had two hits.

Speed, Danielle Wellman and Kendra Younger drove in two runs apiece.

And all of that was just in the first inning.

Jay County took advantage of five errors by the Muncie Southside High School softball team Thursday to score 17 times in the first inning. It added 10 more runs in the second inning on the way to a 29-2 blowout of the visiting Rebels.

"It's a good win for the girls," said JCHS coach Doug Arbuckle, whose team evened its record at 2-2 after dropping both halves of a double-header Saturday to Connersville. "We needed to get back on the winning track after Saturday."

The Patriots (1-2 Olympic Athletic Conference) had just two runs in with two outs in the first inning before back-to-back Southside errors opened the flood gates.

The errors started a run of 14 consecutive batters who reached base for Jay County, the last of which came on a two-run double by Danielle Wellman. Brittany Mann had an RBI triple during the stretch, which included five errors that allowed 15 unearned runs.

In the first inning the Patriots racked up nine hits while sending 21 batters to the plate. Every batter in the JCHS lineup scored at least once, six scored twice and Castillo crossed the plate three times.

The Rebels' problem changed in the second inning, but the result was similar.

Four of the first five Patriot batters in the second inning drew walks as relief pitcher Lindsey Teal gave up seven free passes in the frame. JCHS needed just four hits to score its 10 runs, with Nikka Chaney finishing the effort with a bases-loaded double down the left-field line.

In the third inning, Wellman doubled off the top of the fence in left field for the last of the Patriots' four extra-base hits.

"After her first at-bat, she settled down and stroked the ball really well," said Arbuckle of Wellman, who struck out in her first plate appearance before finishing 3-for-5 with two doubles, a single, three runs and five RBIs. "After the first inning, when there were a lot of errors, we made the adjustments and hit the ball a little bit better."

Speed singled in each of her first four at bats, scored four times and drove in three runs. Mann was 2-for-3 with two walks, four runs and three RBIs.

Castillo scored five runs, and Chaney drove in three with her double.

"You never get enough work on your hitting," said Arbuckle, whose team totaled 16 hits in 33 at bats. "Any extra at bats you can get, and put the ball in play, is going to contribute to your success."

Jay County also took advantage of eight errors and 13 walks.

Free passes led the Southside's only runs as Megan Vaughn walked and scored in the first inning and Courtney McDonald walked and scored in the fourth. The Rebels managed just four hits - two by leadoff hitter Karissa Gors - while striking out six times against JCHS starter Tiffany Davis (2-1).

"Tiffany Davis pitched a lot better game today," said Arbuckle, adding that he was happy with the way she bounced back after suffering the game-one loss Saturday to Connersville. "Obviously I think the run support helped her relax and settle down."

Arbuckle was also complimentary of his defense for staying alert despite the lopsided score. The Patriots committed their only error in the first inning and finished the game with a strike out-throw out double play.

With the bases loaded, Davis struck out McDonald for the second out of the fifth inning. Wellman, the catcher, threw down to Selena McKibben at third base to try to pick off Gors. Instead Gors broke made a break for home plate, but McKibben's return throw was in time for Wellman to put on the tag for the final out of the game.

"I thought for the most part ... the girls stayed sharp," he said. "They didn't relax."

Junior varsity

Abby Denney powered Jay County to a 14-4, five-inning victory over the Rebels.

Denney went 2-for-4 with a double, two runs and two RBIs for the Patriots, who broke the game open with a 10-run second inning. Whitni Somers also had two hits and two RBIs, and Leanna Vore scored three runs.

Anneliese Jetmore, Renae Ray and Kelci Sell added two runs apiece.

Somers got the win, giving up four unearned runs on four hits and three walks in five innings. She struck out five batters.
