Reconstruction work tops permits (07/05/08)

Reconstruction from recent thunderstorms topped the list of building permits applied for in June through the Jay/Portland Building and Planning Department.
Berne Hi-Way Hatchery Inc., 8623 North U.S. 27, Bryant, applied for a permit to build two chicken houses as part of a reconstruction effort. Cost for the projects was estimated at $1 million.
During June, the cost estimate for projects in which permits were applied for totaled $2,546,450.

Native new director
A Portland native recently was named director-at-large of the American Society of Heating, Refrigerating and Air Conditioning Engineers.
Wayne Reedy, who recently retired as engineering manager for Carrier Corporation, Indianapolis, will serve a three-year term. He was named director during the organizations annual meeting held June 21-25.
He also serves on the board of directors and on the publishing and education council.
"ASHRAE provides the industry with technical data and information, standards and design recommendations, and research in support of industry needs," Reedy said in a recent press release. "ASHRAE also provides its members with professional growth and learning experiences when they participate in local and national meetings. Members participating in the national meetings gain the opportunity to network on a wide level, and gain a broader, more international perspective."
Reedy earn a bachelor of science degree in mechanical engineering from Purdue University in 1969. He formerly served on the technical activities committee, the professional development committee, the research advisory panel and the standing standards project committee.
Going up
Construction is underway on the Arthur and Gloria Muselman Wellness Pavilion, located on the Swiss Village North Campus, Berne.
The 21,202-square foot structure is expected to be completed by the end of the year. Contractors are in the process of creating the foundation, installing the sanitary sewer and electrical lines and excavating for the pool.
Limberlost Construction, Shambaugh and Sons, L&L Electric, Tom Jones Construction and LICA Construction are all working on the project. Fanning and Howey of Celina, Ohio, is doing the engineering work.
The center will include aquatics, a strength building fitness area, floor exercise space and game room and a lounge. It is being creating in memory of the Muselmans, who were killed in a car accident.
R & R Employment Inc. Relocated
As of July 8 R&R Employment will be relocated to the John Jay Center for Learning.

Holocaust survivor
to address chamber
Doris Fogel, a Holocaust survivor and former director of the Fort Wayne Jewish Federation, will be the guest speaker at Wednesday morning's networking breakfast meeting of the Jay County Chamber of Commerce in Dunkirk.
The breakfast meeting will begin at 7:30 a.m. Wednesday, July 9, in the Dunkirk Elks Lodge, 1026 S. Main St., Dunkirk. There is a parking lot in the rear of the building.
Chamber executive director Vicki Tague said Fogel will be sharing her experiences as a Holocaust survivor.
"This should be an outstanding program," Tague said.

Almost 200 Layoffs at BorgWarner
BorgWarner, scheduled to be shut down no later than April 2009, laid off 193 workers last Friday.
The notices were posted Friday, leaving 260 hourly works still with jobs and 100 salaried "white collar" workers. The company's contract with Local 287 ends in April 2009. Since 2007 their work roster has gone from 796 workers to 522 to 260 as of last week.

The Purdue University Research Park is hosting a workshop for companies looking to increase sales and profits.
"Bigger Profits Through Targeted Sales" will be held from 7:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. Tuesday, July 22, at the Dauch Alumni Center on Purdue's campus, 403 W. Wood St., West Lafayette.
Gerry Dick, host and owner of Inside Indiana Business, will present during the workshop, sharing his experience in the entrepreneur's world.
