Red Cross holds event (08/21/07)

Taking Note

The American Red Cross Blood Services, Indiana-Ohio Region recently hosted its Annual Meeting and Recognition Event in Fort Wayne, which honored area residents.

Jennay Jackson and Briann Saxman were presented with the Outstanding Youth Volunteer Award. The award recognizes young members of the community who take responsibility for the success of a blood drive in their area.

Betsi Skiver was presented the Outstanding Volunteer Service Award for volunteers at blood drives, donations centers and local Red Cross chapters who serve the community.

Tyson Mexican Original was presented with the Faithful Friend Award which recognizes sponsors that compensate for cancelled mobiles, hosted blood drives during inclement weather or holiday periods and could be counted on to meet a goal.

Receives scholarship

The granddaughter of Dunkirk residents, Lindsay N. Cheek, was recently awarded the Ann Lee Hancock Konneker-Manasseh Cutler Scholars Award to attend Ohio University in Athens, Ohio.

Lindsey is the granddaughter of Mr. and Mrs. Terry Cheek and the great-granddaughter of Jeweldine Cheek, all of Dunkirk.

She graduated from Olean High School in New York state with a 4.0 grade point average and was a member of National Honor Society and participated in volleyball, track and field and basketball. She is the daughter of the Rev. Dr. Derek and Lynette Cheek, Olean, New York.

Earns doctorate

Former Dunkirk resident Jeanette Louise Rife Castillo, received a Doctor of Philosophy degree from Indiana University, Bloomington. Her major was mass communications/telecommunications and her dissertation was entitled "Community Building Collaboration, and Conflict: the Media Ecology of Partisan Political Discussion Boards."

Castillo is a 1982 graduate of Jay County High School and earned a bachelor's degree in creative studies in 1996 from the University of California, Santa Barbara. She earned her master's degree in mass communication from Indiana University in 2006.

The daughter of Dunkirk residents Chuck and Gay Rife, Castillo will be a professor this fall at Florida State University in Tallahassee.

Bike-a-thon

A bike-a-thon to benefit St. Jude Children's Research Hospital is planned for Saturday, Sept. 8, in Dunkirk.
