The Jay County School Corporation was treated Friday to a visit from one of Indiana’s most prominent school officials.
Dr. Suellen Reed, Indiana Superintendent of Public Instruction, stopped by General Shanks Elementary and Jay County High School during a two-day trip to schools across six counties. Dr. Reed was elected to her position in 1992 and was re-elected for a third term in 2000.
Her assistant, Deb Rozales, said that Dr. Reed has visited schools in each of Indiana’s 92 counties during her first two terms, and has vowed to do the same during her third term in office.
“I’m very impressed,” Dr. Reed said shortly after touring JCHS. “As we visited classes we saw teachers who were very enthusiastic about what they were doing; enjoying working with kids, but also a passion for their subject area.”
After touring General Shanks, Dr. Reed had lunch at JCHS during a small reception in the teacher’s lounge. She finished her visit by walking through several of the newer classrooms in the high school and chatting with several teachers. She was accompanied by Jay Schools Supt. Barbara Downing, JCHS principal Wood Barwick and school board members Jay Halstead and Mike Shannon.
“I think the whole atmosphere that’s here is a good one, and I had a good talk with a math teacher about how we’re going to bring about change,” she said. “There are no excuses anymore, everybody’s got to do better and everybody’s got to do more, and it looks like this high school is ready to jump in and do that.”
Dr. Reed was at the forefront of statewide budget negotiations with the Indiana General Assembly, and was a major factor in getting a budget passed that didn’t further cut-back funds to schools across the state.
“Of all the priorities we had, tuition support for out schools came first, because we know we absolutely have to have that,” Reed said. “Do we need a lot of other things? Yes, we certainly do.”
“It’s a great honor for the Jay School Corporation to have Dr. Reed visit us,” Downing said. “I did thank her very much on her work with the state budget; she was instrumental in not having school corporations like ours be flat-lined or straight-lined. She’s very child- and teacher-centered, and we could see that today.”[[In-content Ad]]
