Region nets broadband $$ (5/28/05)
Business Roundup
Indiana Lt. Gov. Becky Skillman recently awarded a $200,000 Rural Development Grant to the East Central Indiana Development.
Grant funds, which were awarded in a Statehouse ceremony in Indianapolis on May 20, will be used to provide financial support for a four-county regional broadband deployment initiative that will afford rural sections, as well as primary communities, broadband Internet access.
The affected counties are Jay, Blackford, Delaware and Grant.
This deployment will also create new opportunities for the communities and surrounding rural areas by providing the level of technology necessary for new businesses or industries locating in the area.
The rural development grants come from two funds, the Rural Development Council Fund and the Rural Development Action Fund.
RDCF monies go to the creation of “regional entities” that promote the improvement of the quality of life in rural Indiana. The RDAF provides grant dollars to entities that work to enhance and assist in improving the economic viability of rural Indiana communities. Grants are awarded through competitive funding rounds. Forty communities received grants for a total of $6.2 million, but as many as 80 communities will benefit from the projects being funded.

“I’m thrilled about our placement on the J.D. Everything we do is focused on building and maintaining strong relationships.”

Modem switch scam
TransWorld Network, a long-distance service provider, warns consumers to beware of a dial-up Internet modem switch scam.
Some web sites trick consumers into paying to access free Internet content. When someone clicks on a pop-up or download site the local connection is disconnected, then reconnected on another, unauthorized phone number in an international location.
The victims receive expensive long distance phone charges. Some victims have been charged more than $1,000. The switch can be made without the consumer’s knowledge or approval.
Lisa Santelli, TransWorld channel support/marketing specialist, suggests two ways to minimize the chances of becoming a victim.
•Request an international call block on your telephone line, as long as you don’t need to make any international calls. This can be done by contacting your long distance carrier.
•If you make international calls, add an account code to your long distance account. This will require an access code to be dialed before any long distance calls can be completed.
