Registration open for Arts in the Parks (05/18/06)

Arts Place in Portland will begin its Arts in the Parks season on June 12 and will continue through Aug. 4 and will offer classes in visual and performing arts. The free classes will be held on weekdays and are for children age seven and older who will complete the first grade this spring.

Life skill winners
Bloomfield Elementary School staff members have announced the April winners for the “Win With Life Skills” program.
Award recipients are students who use life skills daily, but demonstrate the month’s spotlighted skill especially well.
Winner’s for “cooperation” are: Kristen Bickel, Willow Blowers, Jordan Brumbaugh, Adam Haffner, Katelyn Kelly, Mariah Lawrece, Kasandra Loper, Abigail Muhlenkamp, Joey Nuckols, Abby Reier, Jordan Reinhart, Cassy Roberts, Stephanie Rodriguez, Dylan Rose and Kristy Swartzentruber.
Alcohol quiz bowls
The Jay County Drug Prevention Coalition recently teamed with the Jay School Corporation to hold the first Drug and Alcohol Quiz Bowl with 26 students participating.
Lydia Rowles, a sixth grader at East Jay Middle School, was chosen to go on to the Regional Quiz Bowl to be held later in May. She is the daughter of Darry and Cheryl Rowles.

Students from South Adams Middle School in Geneva also participated in the first Adams County Quiz Bowl to test knowledge about the facts and dangers of drugs, tobacco and alcohol.
The fifth grade winner was Samantha Schwartz of South Adams and the sixth grade winner was Travis Hogg of South Adams. The two will compete in a regional quiz bowl in Fort Wayne on May 20.
Achievement awards
Lindsay Rae Ross, a 2002 graduate of Jay County High School, recently completed the dental assisting program at Indiana University, Purdue University in Fort Wayne..
She received the outstanding overall achievement award for maintaining a 4.0 grade point average throughout the program, the outstanding radiology award and outstanding academic achievement in the dental assisting program.
Lindsay is the daughter of Sharon Ross, Pennville, and Darrell Ross, Decatur.
Dean’s list
Joshua Fisher, Fort Recovery, has been named to the dean’s list for the January session at the University of Northwestern Ohio in Lima.
Gregory Snyder has been named to the dean’s list for the winter quarter at Ohio Northern University in Ada. A senior majoring in Mathemathics, he is the son of Edward and Laura Snyder, Fort Recovery.
Brenda Kaup, Fort Recovery, was named to the president’s list for the winter quarter at the University of Northwestern Ohio, in Lima. She attends the college of business.
Graduated
Three students from Jay county were among the 1,475 students who received degrees during graduation ceremonies April 29, at Indiana Wesleyan University, Marion.
Graduating were: Dawn L. Cole, 808 E. Arch St., Portland, B.S. degree in business administration; Terri Renae Eldridge, 444 N. Charles St., Portland, B.S. degree in nursing; and April D. Weigel, 6221 W. 650 N., Bryant, B.S. degree in management.
To graduate
Kate Anderson, Winchester, daughter of Jay County natives, will graduate from Winchester Community High School on June 2.
She is the daughter of Rob and Lisa Anderson, and the granddaughter of Norma Puckett, Portland, and Bob and June Anderson, Redkey.
She is listed in “Who’s Who Among American High School Students,” and was a Randolph County Youth Salute nominee earlier this year.
She will be attending Ball State University and pursuing a degree in pediatric nursing.[[In-content Ad]]
