Jay County REMC has scheduled its 2004 annual meeting for Saturday, April 17.

The event, which will be held at Jay County High School, will begin with a registration/expo at 6 p.m., with the meeting starting at 7 p.m.

Among the items on the agenda are the election of directors from Districts 2, 6 and 9, along with a business meeting and entertainment.

There are two candidates for the District 9 seat — incumbent Diane Antrim and Gene Hindenlang, both residents of Adams County.

Unopposed candidates for director’s seats are rural Portland resident Richard Nixon and Ron Smithson of Randolph County.

JOINS CR STAFF

Rural Portland resident Virginia Cline recently joined the staff of The Commercial Review as its society editor.

A Dunkirk native, Cline previously worked for about two years as a teacher’s assistant through the Jay School Corporation. She worked with individuals studying for their GED.

She and her husband Tracy have four children, Cody, Casey, Carly and Colby. They attend Vineyard Christian Fellowship at the Jay Community Center.

NEW RESTAURANT

Little D’s, a homestyle restaurant, is open for business in Ridgeville.

The restaurant, located at 119 N. Walnut St., just north of Ind. 28, opened for business today at 6 a.m.

The owners are Rich and Deb Homan, who are rural Ridgeville residents. Hours will be 6 a.m. to 8 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday, and 6 a.m. to 2 p.m. Sunday and Monday.

Among those working and cooking will be Donna Bickel, a Portland High School graduate who is Deb Homan’s mother. Bickel said Friday that her daughter, who has worked in food business for many years, has always dreamed of opening her own restaurant.

The only other sit-down restaurant in town is the Ridgeville American Legion.

THEATER PLANNED

Kerasotes Theaters has announced plans to build a 12-screen movie complex near the Muncie Mall.

Construction is expected to begin this summer, with opening set for 2005, a mall spokesperson told The (Muncie) Star-Press this week.

Also included are plans for a Dick’s Bodacious Bar-B-Que Restaurant in a former Goodyear tire store.

Kerasotes currently operates an eight-screen theater at Northwest Plaza Cinemas in Muncie, along with Showplace 7 off Bethel Avenue.

There are currently three movie screens inside the mall operating under the title of Dollar Movies.

ATTEND SHOW

The owners of the Berne Antique Mall recently attended a special show in New York by one of the world’s top doll designers.

Diana and Renee Captain, Bluffton, received invitations to the Tyler Wentworth 2004 House of Wentworth Collection show from Robert Tonner, the owner of Tonner Doll Company and a native of Bluffton.

The fashion show featured models wearing replicas of the 16-inch doll’s outfits.

Tonner’s dolls are available at the Berne Antique Mall, 105 W. Water St.

POSTPONED

A meeting of the Youth Activities Committee of the East Central Indiana Workforce Investment Board has been canceled.

The meeting was originally scheduled for Tuesday, March 9.

The next regularly scheduled meeting at the Muncie WorkOne Center will be held on Tuesday, April 20, from 7:30 to 9 a.m.

DIVIDEND INCREASES

The board of Wal-Mart Stores Inc. recently increased the company’s dividend by 44 percent — upping the amount paid per-share to investors to 52 cents from 36 cents.

The first 13-cent quarterly payment will be made Thursday, April 15 to shareholders-of-record on Friday, March 19.

The annual amount paid in dividends will be $2.25 billion — a $692 million increase.

The world’s largest retailer told The Wall Street Journal that the increase reflected a good fiscal year and was not tied to a recent cut in the federal dividend tax rate.

Wal-Mart reported earnings of $9.05 billion, or $2.07 per share, for the fiscal year ending Jan. 31 — a 14 percent gain from the previous year.
