Reynolds, Chaney lift Jay

CONVERSE — The Patriots made the most of their opportunities.
Although it attempted just four shots on goal in the game, the Jay County High School girls soccer team converted half of them to walk away with a 2-1 victory over the host Oak Hill Golden Eagles.
Sophomore Ericka Reynolds put the Patriots in the lead on her second goal of the season, following through after a shot deflected off Oak Hill goalie Elizabeth Guarneri and scoring about 16 minutes into the game. Nikka Chaney, a senior, gave JCHS (5-3) a 2-0 lead with a goal on a direct kick from just outside the 18-yard box with 2:42 left in the first half.
Oak Hill (1-4-2) cut its deficit in half at the 26:58 mark of the second half, but the Patriots held the home team scoreless the rest of the way to preserve the win.
Mollie May finished with five saves for JCHS.
In the junior varsity game Courtney Knight had the lone goal for the Patriots in a 3-1 defeat.

PARKER CITY — Jay County’s volleyball team came back from a 24-21 deficit in game four to avoid a fifth game Thursday in a 25-22, 25-23, 19-25, 29-27 victory over the host Monroe Central Golden Bears.
Mariah Hornaday racked up 24 kills, including the match-winner, and also had 3.5 blocks. Maria Murphy added 25 digs and 12 kills, and Hannah Ainsworth put up 35 assists.
Alyssa Rigby served the Patriots, who improved to 7-5, to a 10-0 lead in the second game and finished with 13 points. Malarie Houck scored 11 points, and McKenzie Campbell finished with 18 digs.
Courtney Finnerty had four assists, three digs and two kills in the JCHS junior varsity team’s 25-15, 25-14 victory.

Chief gridders fall
The East Jay Middle School eighth grade football team suffered a 19-10 loss Thursday to the visiting New Castle Trojans. The seventh grade team fell 22-6.
Matt Blackford scored the lone TD for the eighth grade Chiefs on a 40-yard run in the fourth quarter, and Nick Larison added the two-point conversion. Clay Chandler and Levi Hummel also combined to make a tackle in the end zone for a safety.
Hunter Younce had a 2-yard TD run for the EJMS seventh graders following a New Castle turnover. However, the Chiefs were hurt by losing four fumbles in the defeat.[[In-content Ad]]
