Rich's slam powers Starfires

Local roundup

WOODBURN - Marcus Rich smacked a grand slam Tuesday and the South Adams High School baseball was able to hold on for a 7-6 victory over the host Woodlan Warriors.

Rich's blast came in the third inning and staked the Starfires to a 6-1 lead. They picked up an insurance run on an error in the top of the sixth, and it ended up being key to the victory.

Woodlan tallied three runs in its final at bat before Nick Batt was able to retire the final two batters to save the victory. Taylor Smith got the win, allowing six runs - five earned - on nine hits and a walk while striking out five in 6 1/3 innings.

In addition to the Rich grand Slam, South Adams also got a pair of RBIs from John Striker. Dustin Wanner and Taylor LeFever scored two runs apiece.

On Monday, the Starfires lost 9-4 to the visiting Churubusco Eagles. LeFever scored a pair of runs in the defeat.

FR baseball loses

FORT RECOVERY - Managing just a single hit, the Fort Recovery High School baseball team dropped its 18th straight game 3-1 to the New Bremen Cardinals.

Nathan Keller allowed two runs on three hits and three walks in 3 2/3 innings to take the loss. Chad Schroer tossed 3 1/3 innings of relief as the Indians dropped to 1-8 overall and 0-9 in the Midwest Athletic Conference.

Nathan Fortkamp singled and drove in the only run for the Indians in the first inning. The Tribe, which gave up single tallies in the third, fourth and sixth innings, also drew six walks.
