Rines' defense powers Patriot (08/29/07)

FORT WAYNE - So far, the road trip is working out just fine.

The Jay County High School volleyball team dominated the fourth game Tuesday night to top the Fort Wayne South Side Archers 25-21, 25-23, 23-25, 25-7. The victory improved the Patriots to 3-1 in their first four matches of their odyssey - they will play four matches and two invitationals on the road and be away from their home court for a total of 22 days - and 8-3 overall.

Shelby Rines was everywhere on defense, recording four times as many digs as anyone else on the squad as she finished with 28. She was also second on the team with 10 points.

Stephanie Wellman had 11 points and 11 kills, Sharon Dirksen finished with 38 assists and Sarah Mescher had 15 points.

Kelsey Wood's seven points, five kills and three digs led the Patriot junior varsity team to a 25-9, 25-12 victory. Kelci Reed had 12 points, Liz Walker totaled nine assists and Ashley Langenkamp notched four digs as the team improved to 6-2.

Boys soccer now 2-1-1

CONNERSVILLE - The Patriot boys soccer team was in control throughout Tuesday and scored all of its goals in the second half of a 3-0 victory over the Connersville Spartans.

Trey Dunn had the first two goals for Jay County, which out-shot its Olympic Athletic Conference rival 22-4. He scored in the 10th minute of the second half off of a Brad Horn assist, and then knocked in a penalty kick two minutes later after the Spartans were called for a hand ball in the box.

Patrick Johnson capped the Patriot effort with a goal at the 12-minute mark.

Dunn led JCHS with five shots on goal, and Horn finished with four. Adam Daniels and Kevin Dirksen combined on the shutout, each coming up with two saves.

Netters now 3-1

Jay County's boys tennis team turned in its second straight shutout Tuesday, topping the Muncie Southside Rebels 5-0.

Mark Alberson and Adam Horn continued to roll for the Patriots, who also topped Northeastern 5-0 Thursday. The No. 2 doubles duo stayed perfect on the year at 7-0 with a quick 6-1, 6-2 win over Nick Albertson and Jared Greek.

Josh Ludy (6-1) also gave up just three games in topping Cody Norvell 6-0, 6-3 at No. 1 singles. In other singles action Phil Powell won at No. 2 by a 7-5, 6-1 count over Brandon Willard, and Kyle Simmons topped Ryan Brand 6-3, 6-2 at No. 3.

The No. 1 doubles pair of Heath Rigby and Thomas McCowan knocked off Skylar Furney and Lynel Curd 6-2, 6-4.

Chase Wellman and Jared Valentine teamed to win both junior varsity doubles matches for Jay County by scores of 8-3 and 8-5.[[In-content Ad]]
