Roadshow to benefit JJC
Taking Note
An event for antique enthusiasts will be held to benefit the John Jay Center in Portland.
The first John Jay Roadshow/Benefit Auction will be held Friday, Aug. 19, and Saturday, Aug. 20, at John Jay. Antiques may be brought in for a professional appraisal at a cost of $5 each or three items for $12. Appraisals will be done Friday from 2 to 5 p.m. and Saturday from 9 a.m. until noon.
Antiques may be placed for auction, if desired, for a consignment percentage or given as a donation. The auction will be held Saturday at 4 p.m. Colts and Cincinnati Reds tickets, as well as certificates from local businesses, will also be auctioned.
The John Jay Center is located at 101 S. Meridian St. For more information, call Josh Gibson at (260) 729-5525 (ext. 235).
Tyson scholarship
Stephanie Schwieterman was awarded a $1,000 Tyson Foods Inc. scholarship from the National FFA Organization.
The scholarship is one of 1,521 awarded through the National FFA Scholarship Program out of 7,649 applicants from across the country.
A recent graduate of Jay County High School, Stephanie plans to attend Purdue University in West Lafayette.
Receives degree
Jeanne K. McMillan received a doctoral degree in special education/early childhood from Ball State University during commencement ceremonies in July.
McMillan is a speech language pathologist and assistant professor in the department of Speech Pathology and Audiology at Ball State. She is also a speech language pathologist for Jay County Hospital Rehabilitation Services and First Steps, Inc. of Indiana.
She and her husband Gary live in rural Portland and have two daughters, Alissa and Jordan. Her parents are Kira and John Gibson, Portland, and Darrell and Loretta Smith, Redkey.
Gets grant
Jay County Public Library patrons will soon have access to more than 2,000 eBooks and audiobooks through the eIndiana Digital Consortium.
Access is due to a grant from the Library Services & Technology Act grant.

Arts Place in Portland is offering ArtsWorks classes this fall at the center at 131 E. Walnut St.
Classes available will be Competitive Advantage, a free class that teaches techniques for getting accepted into shows, fairs and workshops.
Clay for Kids and Clay for Adults begins Sept. 12 or Nov. 7 with registration deadlines Sept. 1 or Oct. 21.
Drawing a Portrait begins Sept. 10 or Oct. 22. with registration deadline Sept. 1 or Oct. 10
Still Life Drawing begins Sept. 17 with registration deadline Sept. 1.
Works on Paper begins Sept. 15 or Nov. 3 with regisration deadlines Sept. 1 or Oct. 21.
