Rocket bats stay hot, chalk up 4th win in a row (06/06/03)

The winning ways continued for the Portland Rockets Thursday.
Racking up an 11-1 win over Shady Nook at Fort Wayne’s Carrington Field, the Rockets improved their season record to 4-1.
Brandon Dillon led the Rockets’ 11-hit attack with two home runs, including a grand slam in the sixth inning. James Nouricki and Adam Childs each had two hits for the Rockets.
Pete Byrum dominated from the mound for five innings, striking out eight and giving up just three hits as he picked up his second win of the season. John Pettibone finished in relief for the Rockets.
The Rockets travel Sunday to Lima Shawnee High School to play the Lima Locos at 6 p.m. (Ohio time).
Golfers progressing
Jay County’s golf team continued to perform well with the sectional meet on the horizon.
The Patriots scored a pair of wins in a three-way meet Thursday with a score of 167. They outdueled the Muncie Southside Rebels (194) and the Southern Wells Raiders (210) to improve to 10-4 on the season.
For the second time in two meets this week sophomores Tyler Johnston and Jesse Shawver shard the high score for the Patriots. The each shot 41, finishing one stroke ahead of Joe O’Conner of Muncie Southside for match medalist honors.
Nathan McClung matched O’Conner’s 42, and Adam Foster finished the varsity scoring with a 43. Alex Hunt hit the clubhouse with a 44.
Jay County will be in sectional action Monday at LaFontaine Golf Club in Huntington at 9 a.m.
Junior League
Mark Alberson walked and scored in the fifth inning Thursday to give Graphic Printing a 9-8 victory over Redkey Lions in their Portland Junior League Sandy Koufax League game.
Winchester topped Portland Elks in the other Koufax game, 5-1.
In softball action Thursday it was Coke sneaking by Tyson Foods 10-9 in the short three-inning contest in the Rookie League. First National Bank also topped Loy Auction and Realty 23-12.
There was also a Minor League softball game played Wednesday in which Portland Forge Credit Union defeated Optimists International 18-8.
Graphic 9, Redkey 8
Keith Schubert and Dustin Garringer each scored a pair of runs for graphic. Garringer had a single, and Schubert knocked in a run.
The only other Graphic hits were a double by Seth VanSkyock and a single from Ronnie Reynolds.
Matt Delzieth had three hits, one run and one RBI for Redkey.
Winchester 5, Elks 1
Brock Morrison had a one-run single, and Justin Schwieterman followed with a two-RBI single in the second inning, and Winchester never trailed. Hank Pegg doubled and scored in the third inning.
Nate Markle put the only run on the board for Elks with a fourth-inning homer.
Coke 10, Tyson 9
Kathryn Braun knocked a pair of singles and scored three times, including what would be the winning run in the third inning. Megan Nichols had two hits and two runs.
Mariah Hornaday and Paige Lennartz each scored twice for Tyson.
First National 23, Loy 12
Emily Devoe had a perfect 4-for-4 day with a home run and four runs scored for First National. Nikka Chaney, Hanna Lugar and Lexie Gierhart each scored three times.
Danielle Wellman hit home runs in each of her three plate appearances for Loy.
Forge 18, Optimists 8
Vicki Taylor was 3-for-3 with a triple and three runs for Forge, and Kayla Phillips went 3-for-4 with a triple and three runs. Pazia Speed also added two hits and two runs, and Adrienne Woytik scored three times.
Shelby Gierhart, Brittany Mann and Kasey Walker each had a hit and a run for Optimists.
East Jay rolling
The East Jay baseball team has improved to 8-1 and currently sits in first place in the Muncie League.
Leading the way for East Jay thus far this season has been Casey Waters. He is hitting .538 and has knocked a trio of home runs.
Michael Jobe is not far behind him, hitting .481. He has also accounted for three home runs.
Aaron Wilhelm (.467) and Joshua Ludy (.429) are also well over the .400 mark, and Caleb Carpenter has blasted a pair of homers.
Jay-Randolph tryouts
Tryouts for the Jay-Randolph American Leagion baseball team will be June 11 and June 16 at 5 p.m.
The tryouts will be held at Winchester High School and are open to any high school baseball player in Jay or Randolph county. For more information call Mark Mayfield at (765) 584-6842 or (765) 584-1663.
Wrestling clinic
There will be a free wrestling clinic at South Adams High School Saturday, June 14.
The clinic will be from 9 a.m. to noon, and is for wrestlers ages kindergarten through 12th grade. It will be run by former Starfire and current Penn State wrestler Jeremy Hart.
