Rockets close with pair of victories

The Portland Rockets closed out their regular-season Saturday with a double-header sweep of the visiting Warsaw Indians, 5-4 and 6-3, at Runkle-Miller Field. Sunday’s scheduled games against Taylor University were canceled.
Seventh-inning heroics gave the Rockets their first victory Saturday as they trailed by one heading into their final at bat.
Jay County High School graduate Heath Williams led off the final frame with a single, and Chris Tillery advanced him to second with a sacrifice bunt. Bryan Brudi, who had two home runs on the day, added a single, and Mark Isenberg drove in the winning run with a shot to the gap in left-center field.
Williams and Tillery each finished with two hits.
Daniel Bollenbacher (South Adams) went the distance for the win, striking out seven batters while allowing seven hits. He over came five errors.
Will Walters racked up six shutout innings in the second game to lead Portland to the win. He gave up just three hits while striking out seven batters and has now thrown nine consecutive scoreless frames.
The Rockets (15-15) took control early, scoring three times in the first two innings, and had a 6-0 lead going into the seventh.
Portland will host the World Baseball Congress Tournament beginning Friday.

JC cheerleaders win
ANDERSON — The Jay County High School cheerleading squad took first place at the Madison County Fair cheerleading contest Saturday.
The Patriots took the top spot in the varsity division, finishing ahead of runner-up Mooresville. The junior varsity squad posted a second-place finish.
JCHS will compete at the Indiana State Fair on Aug. 21.

Waters wins last
SALA BAGANZA, Italy — Mitch Waters closed out his season in Italy Sunday, pitching the Sala Baganza Baseball Club to a 9-1 victory over Heila Poviglio.
Waters went the distance in his final outing for Sala Baganza, allowing just one unearned run on three hits. He struck out 11 batters.
The 2002 Jay County High School graduate currently ranks fourth in Italy’s Serie A2 in opposing batting average at .201 and fifth with a 1.91 ERA. He led the league in runners picked off (eight) as he compiled a 7-5 record.
Waters, who has also pitched for the Kalamazoo Kings of the Frontier League and played semi-pro basketball for the Indiana Steamrollers, will return to the Portland Rockets to pitch in tournament play.[[In-content Ad]]
