CELINA, Ohio — The curse of No. 1 has struck the Rockets.
Portland dropped its second straight game since taking over the top spot in the Indiana Semi-Pro Baseball Web site’s state poll Monday, getting shut out 10-0 by the Grand Lake Mariners Wednesday.
The Rockets (16-7) trailed 3-0 after four frames, but Grand Lake put up three runs in the fifth and four in the seventh to pull away.
Phil Ernst took the defeat as six different Portland pitchers combined to allowed 15 free passes — 12 walks and three hit batsmen.
Matt Steinke had two of the six hits for the Rockets, who had the bases loaded in the sixth inning but could not score.
Three of Portland’s seven losses this year have come against the Mariners.
Stanton, Finnerty tie
DUNKIRK — Megan Stanton and Kady Finnerty took care of all the scoring Wednesday as the Lightning and Thunder finished in a 3-3 tie in the West Jay Community Center Summer Soccer League game.
The contest was tied at two at halftime, and Finnerty picked up her third goal give her team the lead in the second half.
But minutes later Stanton scored for the third time on a throw-in from Megan Stanton to forge the tie.[[In-content Ad]]
