Rockets' finale doused by rain (07/27/05)
Local roundup
FORT WAYNE — The Portland Rockets were looking for their 30th win Tuesday night against LaMargarita Blues. But, the weather came out the victor.
LaMargarita had a 2-0 lead thanks to a two-run first-inning single by former Rocket Tommy Pearce when the game was called after just one inning of play.
Portland finished the regular season with a 29-13-1 record and a first-place 15-4 mark in the Fort Wayne Baseball Federation.
Tourney starts Friday
Portland hosts the American Amateur Baseball Congress state tournament beginning Friday at Runkle-Miller Field.
With the host Rockets off the schedule on day one, their neighbors to the north — the Geneva Cardinals — will be the feature attraction.
Geneva will open tournament play Friday at 5 p.m. against the Lebanon Merchants. Game two will pit the top-ranked team by the Indiana Semi-Pro Baseball Web site, the South Bend Senators, against the sixth-ranked Crawfordsville Eagles.
The losers of those games will play Saturday at noon, while the Rockets will get the Geneva/Lebanon winner Saturday at 2:30 p.m. Two more games will follow Saturday with action to continue Sunday beginning at noon.
Adam is aces
Although he doesn’t play for the Jay County golf team any more, 2005 graduate Adam Foster is still finding a way get his name in print.
Foster drilled a hole-in-one at Portland Golf Club Tuesday afternoon. He hit his ace using a 7-iron on the 178-yard, par-3 18th hole at PGC.
The shot was witnessed by former teammate and fellow 2005 JCHS graduate Nathan McClung and Mark Tatman.
Foster, who plans to play at St. Francis, was a member of the best boys golf team in Patriot history. The squad set the team record — 148 for nine holes — in 2004, notched a 26-1 dual-meet record over the last two seasons and qualified for regional play in 2003. Foster finished third in the sectional in 2003 and also qualified for the regional round as an individual this season.
Redkey takes tourney
The Redkey All-Star softball team, which had so much success last summer, reunited to win the Portland Invitational Championship Saturday.
Redkey defeated Portland 11-4 and Blackford 8-7 in 10 innings in round-robin play to earn the top seed for the elimination round. The squad went on to another win over Blackford, this time 7-6, to win the title.[[In-content Ad]]
