The weekend had potential for the Rockets. It just didn't quite come to fruition.
Portland lost a pair of one-run games over the weekend as it went 3-1. They lost 2-1 to Nucor at home Saturday before coming back to win game two 14-12, and then lost 5-4 in 11 innings and 3-0 Sunday to Taylor University at Canterbury High School in Fort Wayne.
Jay County High School graduates Heath Williams and Andy Hughes were among the five players with multiple hits in the victory, finishing with two apiece. Cameron Brannock led the team with three hits, and Ryan Shell and Brandon Van Matre each had two.
South Adams graduate Dan Bollenbacher tossed the seventh for the save. Tyler Mills picked up the win in relief of Josh Atkinson (JCHS).
Eric Van Matre pitched well in the opener against Nucor, striking out 14 batters.
Bollenbacher tossed three-plus scoreless innings in the 11-inning loss Sunday before the Rockets fell in the 11th inning. Josh Shatto (JCHS) and Nick Dunn combined to allow just six hits in game two against Nucor, but Portland was limited to one in the defeat.
Fugiett scores 7
Daniel Fugiett led all scorers Saturday as he tallied every goal for the Lightning in a 7-3 win over the Cyclones in the West Jay Community Center Summer Soccer League.
Leigha Stachler had five goals to lead the Thunder to an 8-2 win over the Twisters, and Ian Miller also scored five in the Jaguars' 6-1 victory over the Lions. Matthew Paquette's four goals gave the Hurricanes a 4-3 win over the Blizzards, and Zacheriah Throop put in thee goals in the Whales' 4-3 victory over the Sting Rays.
Other top scorers were: Pacie Denney and Graiden Miller with two goals each in the Squidz' 4-1 win over the Sharks and Sydney Wall with two as the Cheetahs beat the Tigers 5-3.
Panthers split two
The Jay County Panthers minor league football team has split its first two games of the season, defeating the Detroit Trojans 28-0 Saturday after losing their season-opener 38-6 to the New York Renegades.
In the opening two games, Andy Castello has led the team with a total of 45 yards on 16 carries. Fellow Jay County High School graduate Justin Florence has recorded a team-best 12 tackles.[[In-content Ad]]
