Rockets host AABC tournament beginning Friday (07/29/04)

The American Amateur Baseball Congress Indiana State Tournament, hosted by the Portland Rockets, is set to start with a pair of games Friday.

Tournament play will open at Runkle-Miller Field in Portland Memorial Park at 5:30 p.m. as the Rockets’ Fort Wayne League rival LaMargarita takes on Lebanon. Portland (29-11) will follow as it plays Crawfordsville at 8 p.m.

The two losing teams from Friday’s games will meet in an elimination contest Saturday at 11:30 a.m. The winning teams will play in semifinal action at 2 p.m.

There are also games scheduled for Saturday at 4:30 and 7 p.m. and Sunday at 1 p.m., but the match-ups for those contests have yet to be determined.

Jay practices to begin

Practice for the Jay County High School fall sports season will begin Monday, Aug. 2.

The boys tennis team will kick off its season as it opens practice at 7 a.m., and the boys and girls cross country teams will begin at 7:30 p.m. The football and girl soccer teams will start practice at 8 a.m.

The girls golf team will hit the links at Portland Country Club at 10 a.m., and the volleyball team will practice at East Jay Middle School at 10 a.m. The boys soccer team will open at 5 p.m.

All athletes must have a sports physical on file in the JCHS athletics office before they may begin practicing. For more information, call (260) 726-9306.

Golf outing

The J. Gordon Meeker Golf Outing, hosted by the Jay Community Center and Portland Country Club, is scheduled for Saturday, Aug. 28 at 12:30 p.m..

The cost of the outing, which will use a four-person scramble format, is $160 for any team registering before Aug. 20. Those who register after Aug. 20 will be charged $200.

There will be prizes for first, second and third place teams, and there will also be awards for longest drive, closest to the pin and other contests. Registration forms are available at the community center.

YMCA fun ride

The Randolph County YMCA will hold its Fun Ride Saturday, Aug. 14.

The event will begin at the YMCA, with bicycles starting at 9:30 a.m. and motorcycles starting at 10:30 a.m. The entry fee is $10, and there will be awards for best-dressed biker and best-looking motorcycle.

Co-ed softball

The deadline to register for the Jay Community Center’s 2004 co-ed softball league is Friday.

Games are scheduled to begin Sunday, Aug. 8, with regular-season double-headers being played through Sept. 12.

A two-week, double-elimination tournament will follow on Sunday, Sept. 19 and 26.

The team registration fee is $200, with a limit of 16 players per team. Registration forms and league rules are available at the community center.
