Rockets lock up Fort Wayne League title (07/14/03)

Local Roundup

Ryan Rammel had the spark.

The first baseman’s eight inning home run gave the Portland Rockets a 3-2 win over Crumback-Symons in the first game of Sunday’s double-header at Carrington Field in Fort Wayne. Portland cruised to a 12-1, five-inning victory in the second game to lock up the Fort Wayne League title with a 16-2 league record.

The Rockets (22-3), who have won 14 straight games, were in jeopardy of losing the league title as Crumback forced extra innings in the first game.

However, Rammel hooked his homer around the left field foul pole for the one-run lead.

With a man on first in the bottom of the frame Rammel made the game-ending play, knocking down a ball at first base. He stepped on the bag for the force out at first, and then ran down the runner to complete the double-play.

John Pettibone took the victory.

Matt Ousley and Pete Byrum, both undefeated on the year, combined to shut down Crumback in the second contest. Portland scored nine runs in the third inning to give their pitches plenty of support.

The leading batters on the day were Luke Momrik and Brandon Dillon, each with five hits. Josh Mayfield had four hits.
