Rockets' Miller to be inducted (06/16/06)

Local roundup

A Portland resident will add to his long list of baseball honors Saturday.

Ray Miller, the former long-time manager of the Portland Rockets, will be inducted to the Indiana Semipro Baseball Hall of Fame Saturday. The 7 p.m. ceremony will be part of an eight-team tournament at Highland Park in Kokomo.

Miller amassed more than 900 wins during his nearly 30 years coaching the Portland Rockets, a team he took over during the 1972 season. His No. 23 is the only Rocket number which has been retired.

Before coming to Portland, he played basketball, football and baseball at Manchester College. He then coached high school basketball at Hartford Township and Atwood.

Miller was inducted to the National Semipro Baseball Association Hall of Fame in 2003. The Portland Rockets’ home field was named in his honor in 2000.
