Rockets open with two wins (05/23/05)
Baseball roundup
PORTLAND — The New York Yankees went through a slump to start the 2005 season. But they never got pummeled like the Indianapolis Yankees did when they came to Portland this weekend.
The Portland Rockets opened the 2005 season with a mercilous beating of the Indianapolis squad, ending both games by the mercy rule 10-0 and 23-2.
The Rockets (2-0) scored three times in the first inning of game one, twice on an RBI single by Phil Bruns, and never had any problems with the Yankees.
Bruns and fellow St. Henry, Ohio graduate Neil Schmitz powered the offensive juggernaut. Schmitz went 5-for-6 with a grand slam, two doubles and eight RBIs, and Bruns finished 6-of-7 with six RBIs.
Brandon Cooley also hit a home run as the Rockets racked up 31 hits compared to just three for Indianapolis.
South Adams graduate Matt Ousley took the win in the first game, tossing three no-hit innings while striking out five. Josh Jellison, a Jay County graduate, earned the win in game two.
Patriot baseball splits
WABASH — The Jay County baseball team split its double-header against the Wabash Apaches Saturday, winning the opener 7-3 and losing 10-4 in game two.
The Patriots (9-11) trailed 1-0 early in the opener, but scored three times in the third inning and twice in the fourth to grab the lead for good. Eric Somers and Josh Shatto each had three hits in the victory, and Trent Bailey added two hits and two RBIs.
Not surprisingly, Chad Keen, who tossed back-to-back no-hitters earlier this year, was on the mound for the win. He allowed three runs on six hits while striking out seven.
Josh Atkinson tossed three scoreless innings to open game two as Jay County built a 4-0 lead. But he took the loss as he was tagged for 10 runs in the fourth and fifth.
Keen had a couple of hits in the defeat.
Jay JV baseball goes 1-1
CENTERVILLE — Jay County’s junior varsity baseball team capped its season with a close loss and a big win at the Centervile Tournament Saturday.
The Patriots scored five seventh-inning runs in the opener but still fell 11-8 to Franklin County before coming back to slaughter Rushville 19-5 in five innings to finish the season.
Jay County (15-6) scored nine times in the first and second innings for game two, and Justin Mann, R. J. Fuller, Aaron Bogenschutz and Ryan Rogers each finished 3-for-3. Tony McCowan also had three hits as the offense went wild to give Michael Jobe the victory.
Jobe allowed five runs on five hits while striking out six and walking four.
The Patriots’ rally in the final frame of the opener was not enough to overcome Franklin County’s eight-run fifth inning. Fuller took the loss as he allowed nine runs on six hits in 31/3 innings.
Tom McCowan went 3-for-4 with a double in the defeat, and Tony McCowan hit a home run.[[In-content Ad]]
