Rockets, rain fall Monday (07/28/04)

Local Roundup

Catch-up baseball is never easy, but it’s tougher in the rain.

Falling behind to Decatur’s Dragons in Red Carrington League play-offs in Fort Wayne Monday night, the Portland Rockets couldn’t manage to put enough runs on the scoreboard. The final score: Dragons 9, Rockets 8.

Rockets pitcher Pete Byrum gave up six runs on six hits in three innings. Kurt Woeste was credited with the loss, giving up two runs on one hit. The wet weather was a factor as Woeste hit two batters and made two wild pitches to help the Dragons’ cause.

The Rockets had the tying run on base when they made the final out of the game.

With a regular season record of 29-11, the Rockets now go on to the state tournament which begins on Friday at Runkle-Miller Field in Portland.
