Rockets rally by the Locos (06/09/03)
Local Roundup
The Portland Rockets won for the fifth time in a row after an opening-game loss, topping the Lima Locos 4-1 Sunday.
Portland had no hits through the first seven innings, and were staring at a 1-0 deficit. Then came the rally.
An error and a Josh Mayfield walk put runners on for Brad Buckingham, who delivered a game-tying single in his first start of the season. Three batters later Adam Childs delivered a triple with the bases loaded to push the Rockets to a 4-1 lead.
Buckingham and Childs accounted for the team’s only two hits of the game.
Starter Matt Ousley, a graduate of South Adams, gave up a run in the first inning before putting up zeroes in the next five. He then turned it over to the bullpen, which tossed three more scoreless innings as Portland came back.
Urban bailed out
Jeff Urban, who played several seasons with the Portland Rockets in the 1990s, got the start for the Fresno Grizzlies.
Urban survived just 2 2/3 innings, allowing four runs on five hits. He struck out three and walked three.
However, his team rallied for a 5-4 win, leaving him with a no decision.
Pearce injured
After a couple of great games, former Portland Rocket Tommy Pearce hit a speedbump in his career with the Richmond Roosters.
Pearce injured his knee while sliding into second base during Richmond’s 11-0 win over the Chillicothe Paints Thursday. He had led the Roosters offensively in two of the previous three games, hitting home runs in both contests.
Junior League
Danielle Wellman hit three home runs for the second straight game Saturday, leading Loy Auction and Real Estate past Coca-Cola 16-7 in Portland Junior League Rookie League softball action.
In the only other game Saturday, First National Bank trounced Graphic Printing 24-5.
Wellman, who also had three homers in a loss Thursday to First National, went wild again against Loy. She hit round-trippers in each of her three at bats during the three innings game.
She was joined by LeAnn Horn, who had three hits, including a triple, and scored three times. Katie Simmons also had three hits and scored a pair of runs.
Timara Ruiz had three singles and scored a trio of runs for Coca-Cola.

Lexie Gierhart matched the effort turned in by Wellman, also knocking three home runs. Rachelle Jackson hit a pair of home runs and scored three times.
Whitney Runyon had two hits and two runs for Graphic.[[In-content Ad]]
