Rockets removed quickly from NABF regional tournament (08/08/03)

After a disastrous end to the American Amateur Baseball Congress tournament two weeks ago, the Portland Rockets got one more chance.

As the champions of the Fort Wayne League, Portland earned a spot in the National Amateur Baseball Federation regional tournament in Fort Wayne. But, the Rockets couldn’t make the second chance pay off, losing 6-1 to the league rival LaMargarita Blues, and 9-5 to the Pontiac Cubs.

Matt Ousley took the game-one loss, his first of the season, allowing six runs on six hits in five innings. Pete Byrum suffered just his second defeat, allowing six runs on nine hits in 3 1/3 innings.

Ryan Rammel and Brandon Dillon each had home runs for Portland in the losses.

The Rockets finished the season at 28-7.

Volleyball camp

The Jay County High School volleyball camp for sixth through eighth graders will be next week.

The camp will be Monday through Thursday from 3:30 to 5 p.m. at JCHS. It will be run by JCHS coach Fred Medler, his staff and players.

Registration will be Monday at 3 p.m., prior to the first day of the camp. The entry fee is $20, which includes a T-shirt.

Junior League banquet

Portland Junior League will hold its post-season banquet Monday, Aug. 11. The banquet will be at the Portland Moose Lodge beginning at 6 p.m.

Junior high practice

The practice start dates for several area junior high teams have been released.

Practice for the West Jay football team will start Tuesday Aug. 12 at 9 a.m.

The South Adams Middle School boys cross country team will get on the run, starting with the high school team Monday at 5 p.m. The girls cross country team will start practice Monday, Aug. 11 at 8 a.m.

The junior high volleyball team is scheduled to start practicing Wednesday, Aug. 20, with the seventh graders at 3:30 p.m. and the eighth graders at 5 p.m.

Equipment pickup for eighth grade football players will be Monday, Aug. 11 at 3 p.m., and for seventh graders it will be Tuesday, Aug. 12 at 3 p.m. Practice will begin Wednesday, Aug. 13 at 3:30 p.m.

Golf outing

The Portland Country Club Women’s Association will hold its Rally for a Cure golf outing next month.

The event will be August 12 at PCC with registration beginning at 8:30 a.m. Those interested in playing should contact Susan Meinerding at (260) 726-9169.

Pee wee football

Registration for the Jay County Pee Wee Football League will be Saturday, Aug. 16 and Saturday, Aug. 23 from 8 a.m. to noon at Hines-Inman Memorial Stadium in Portland.

The league is for all Jay County students will be in fourth, fifth or sixth grade this year. The entry fee is $25 per child.

Community Center

The Jay Community Center has several activities scheduled for the upcoming weeks.

The Center is bringing back the corporate challenge, which will run from Saturday, Sept. 20 through Saturday, Oct. 4. Teams must register by Friday, Aug. 22, and team packets are available at the Community Center.

Teams will compete in golf, bowling, euchre, volleyball, badminton, softball, timed walk, down-on-the-farm relays, 5k run, basketball shooting, 3-on-3 basketball and ping-pong.

The center will also be sponsoring the J. Gordon Meeker Golf Outing at Portland Country Club Sunday, August 24.

The outing will be played in a four-person scramble format, and there is no entry fee. Teams must only pay a $60 cart fee.

There will be cash prizes for the first through fourth place teams, with awards also being given for straightest drive, closest to the pin, and longest drive.
