Rockets roll in Heartland opener

VAN WERT, Ohio — It didn’t take long for the defending league champions to show their dominance.
The Portland Rockets scored seven times in the top of the first inning Thursday as they rolled to an 11-1 victory over the Van Wert Twisters in their first Heartland Baseball League game of the season.
Jensen Painter drove in the game’s opening run with a double, and Jay County High School graduates Billy Wellman and Mitch Waters each finished with three hits and three RBIs. Dan Bollenbacher (South Adams) singled in his only at bat.
Devin Wilburn made his first appearance for the Rockets (7-4) this season, allowing just one unearned run on one hit while striking out five in four innings of work. Tyler Reynolds tossed four scoreless innings, and Travis Gray pitched the ninth to close out the win.
Portland will play the Lima Buckeyes its first home game of the season at 1 p.m. Saturday.

Keihn paces Brewster
Lydia Keihn drove in half of her team’s runs Thursday as Brewster Electric picked up a 10-6 Portland Junior League Rookie softball victory over First Merchants Bank.
Keihn finished with five RBIs and three runs as she singled in all four of her at bats. Grace Brewster also went 4-for-4 and totaled three runs and one RBI.

Tricia Ison paced First Merchants with three hits, two RBIs and a run.
Destiny McManus had three hits, two runs and two RBIs in Jay County REMC’s 9-2 win over Portland Optimist. Haleigh Clayton went 3-for-3 with three runs.
Maebry Ninde had two hits, a run and an RBI for Optimist.

Three for four
REDKEY — Three players had the number four on their minds Wednesday as they led the Mets to a 17-4 victory over the Red Sox in Redkey Junior League Minor baseball.
Josh Dowlen, Parker Nichols and Quinn Faulkner each went 4-for-4 with four runs to pace the victory.
Kess McBride had four hits and two runs as the Cardinals topped the Cubs 9-3.
In Major baseball, Logan Brown finished 2-for-3 with a  triple in the Pirates’ 11-1 win over the Reds, and Noah Arbuckle totaled two hits and three runs as the Yankees edged the Red Sox 8-7.
Leading wins in Minor baseball Tuesday and Major baseball Monday were Colton Walker (4-for-4 with a double and a triple), Tavin Wasson (5-for-5 with a home run, a double and four runs), Garrett Rodgers (4-for-4 with two runs) and Max Moser (3-for-4 with three runs).[[In-content Ad]]
