PORTLAND — The Portland Rockets looked well on their way to a four-win weekend when everything fell apart.
The Rockets allowed seven runs in the bottom of the sixth inning Sunday to drop the second game of a double-header to the Crumback Simons of Fort Wayne, 8-5. Portland won the first game 3-1, and took both halves of a double-header against the South Bend Indians Saturday.
Up 5-1 in the second contest, the Rockets (9-3) gave the ball to Jay County star Josh Jellison for his debut with the team. Jellison struggled out of the gate, walking the first two batters he faced.
He also gave up a pair of hits and wasn’t helped by an Adam Childs error, as he left the game after recording just one out.
Adam Johnson entered and struggled as well, with each of the seven batters he faced reaching base. He recorded one out when Keith Nunley cut down Justin Konopacki at the plate on a fielder’s choice, but by the time he left the game Crumback had an 8-5 lead.
Finally Warren Dailey was able to strike out Joe Corona with the bases loaded to end the inning, but only after the Simons had brought 13 batters to the plate and scored seven runs.
Adam Falbe went the distance for the win for Crumback, finishing with eight strikeouts. Konopacki was 2-for-4 with a double and an RBI, and Andy Nucci went 2-for-3 with a double, two runs and a RBI.
The Crumback rally wasted a solid effort by 2000 Jay County graduate Pete Byrum. He struck out four and allowed just one run on four hits in five innings.
Portland scored three times in the first inning with the help of a pair of Crumback errors. It added two more runs in the fourth with three straight two-out hits by Matt Gard, Nunley and Josh Mayfield only to watch the lead slip away.
Nunley and Matthew Curtis each had two hits for Portland.
The first game was all about the outstanding arm of South Adams graduate Matt “Moose” Ousley and great offensive execution.
Ousley dominated Crumback, allowing just three hits in the complete-game victory. He struck out five and walked one.
The top four hitters in the Rockets’ order went just 1-for-12 against Crumback, but the rest of the crew got the job done.
With the game tied at 1-1 in the fourth inning, James Nowicki hit an infield single. Mitch Waters, Jay County class of 2002, put down a sacrifice bunt to move him over, and pinch hitter Regan Allee delivered an RBI double for the Portland lead.
Two innings later Nowicki led off with a walk and was again pushed to second by a Waters sacrifice bunt. Allee struck out, but Matt Gard picked him up with a single to right field to bring in the insurance run.
The first Rocket run came in the third inning when Justin Hole started the frame with a walk. Mayfield immediately followed with a double to bring Hole to the plate.
Portland’s next game is at home Thursday against the Coldwater Moons at 6 p.m.[[In-content Ad]]
