Rockets sweep Fort Wayne tourney

Local roundups

FORT WAYNE - The Portland Rockets loved the walk-off this weekend.

The team went 4-0 and captured the Fort Wayne Federation Tournament title with three walk-off wins.

In game one Friday, Michael Ingram pounded a two-out, bases loaded single to top the Fort Wayne Cubs 5-4 after a solid pitching performance by South Adams High School alum Dan Bollenbacher.

In game two, Bill Geeslin threw six innings and Tyler Mills wrapped up the seventh tied up 1-1. With Bryce Cook on third, Chris Tillery squared up and threw down the suicide squeeze, bringing Cook across for walk-off No. 2.

Saturday night the Rockets cruised over the LaMagarita Blues 7-2. Chris Tillery chalked up three hits and Michael Ingram added a pair in the win.

In the championship game Sunday, Portland led 2-0 through six before the Shady Nook Jackers racked up four runs to steal the lead. Riley Muhlenkamp and Thomas McCowan singled in the bottom half of the inning to trim it 4-3.

Tyler Palmer held the Jackers in the seventh and the Rockets rallied, winning on a wild pitch as Justin Morero took home.

With the tournament sweep this weekend, the Rockets evened out their record to 10-10 and have won five of their last six.

Almost complete

SALA BAGANZA, Italy - Mitch Waters came up one out short of a complete game over Messina.

Waters, a 2002 Jay County High School grad, went 8 2/3 for the Sala Baganza Baseball Club in a 2-1 win over Messina Sunday. Waters gave up one run, four hits and four walks, but struck out seven.

He gave up a one-out walk in the top of the ninth and the runner advanced to second on a ground ball to third when he was pulled.

Signed

Sam Heckard, a 2010 South Adams High School graduate, signed a letter of intent Monday to run cross country and track for the Bethel College Pilots.

A four-year letter winner, Heckard was part of Starfire squads that brought home two cross country conference championships and he earned second team all-conference honors twice in cross country.[[In-content Ad]]
