Dan Bollenbacher, Eric Van Matre and Tyler Holloway combined to shut down Huntington University Sunday to lead the Portland Rockets to a doubleheader sweep — 3-1 and 6-1 — at Portland Memorial Park’s Runkle Miller Field.
Bollenbacher, a South Adams High School graduate, extended his scoreless innings streak to 40 before giving up a run in the opener. He struck out seven.
Van Matre and Holloway combined on a no-hitter in game two, with Van Matre striking out seven batters in five innings.
Heath Williams (Jay County), who had been hitting second, returned to the leadoff spot and paced the offense for Portland by going 4-for-5 with five RBIs in the two-game set. The Rockets (31-9) have not lost since July 3.
Nichols, Mills 2nd
MONTPELIER — Local drivers had a good weekend at Montpelier Motor Speedway with two placing second in Thunder Cars events.
Travis Nichols and Steve Mills, both of Portland, finished second in the Thunder Cars races Friday and Saturday nights respectively. Nichols was third behind Mills in Saturday’s action.
Also Saturday, Kenny Byrge of rural Portland made his return to the United Midget Racing Association circuit and finished third in the 20-lap feature behind C.J. Leary and Nick Speidel.
Doug St. Myers, Redkey, placed fifth in Saturday’s UMP Modifieds event, and Jamie Heiser, Fort Recovery, took eighth in the Super Streets race.[[In-content Ad]]
