Rockets sweep South Bend

The Portland Rockets continued rolling this weekend, winning three out of four games to improve to 10-5.
Portland dominated a Sunday doubleheader against the host South Bend Sultans — 12-0 in five innings and 7-2 — and split two games at home Saturday against the Warsaw Indians with a 2-0 win and a 9-8 loss in eight innings.
Tyler Reynolds headlined another run of impressive pitching efforts, tossing a no-hitter in the opening win over South Bend. He allowed just one base runner and struck out four batters.
Tyler Holloway added a three-hitter to win the second game Sunday, and Eric Van Matre threw five innings of no-hit ball to earn the victory Saturday over Warsaw.
Ben Smith hit home runs in each game against South Bend, and Geoff Bowers blasted one in the game-two loss to Warsaw.
The Rockets, who have won nine of 11 after a 1-3 start, racked up 44 hits in the four-game weekend.
Two named all-state
The Indiana High School Golf Coaches’ Association on Friday named Jay County High School seniors Drew Houck and Austin Mann as first-team Academic All-State honorees.
Houck and Mann, who shot 85 and 92 respectively for the Patriots in the sectional tournament, received their awards at a banquet Friday at Carmel’s Plum Creek Golf Club. JCHS was the only school to have two athletes on the all-state first team.
In order to earn the award, a golfer had to be a senior, carry a grade point average of at least 3.5, achieve a minimum math and verbal SAT score of 1,100 and participate in at least half of his team’s matches.
Longhorns are perfect
MUNCIE — The Indiana Longhorns 16-and-younger baseball team, which includes Jay County High School’s Chance Fuller, went undefeated in tournament action this weekend.Fuller’s squad went 5-0 at Muncie Southside, winning the tournament championship game 15-10. The Longhorns were runners-up in tournament action the previous weekend.
Baldauf places eighth
MONTPELIER — Jeff Baldauf turned in the best effort among the three area drivers who competed Saturday at Montpelier Motor Speedway.
Baldauf, a Portland resident, turned in an eighth-place finish out of 18 competitors in the Super Streets A Main race. Richard Williams (Portland) and Jamie Heiser (Fort Recovery) finished 13th and 15th respectively.
Nichols powers
Tea Nichols went 4-for-4 Friday to pace Portland Optimist in its 9-7 Portland Junior League Rookie softball victory over Persimmon Ridge. Also Friday, First Merchants Bank topped Loy Real Estate and Auction 16-3.
Nichols doubled in her first at bat and added three singles as she scored three times and drove in two runs. Kaitlyn Hicks added four hits, two runs and an RBI in the victory.
Jayden Claytor drove in six runs with four hits for First Merchants, and Brianna Lothridge had four hits and four runs.
Lee leads Lions
DUNKIRK — Zaaron Lee scored twice as many goals as any other player Saturday in the West Jay Community Center Summer Soccer League, leading the Lions to a 9-3 victory over the Jaguars.
Lee’s eight goals powered the Lions, who also got one score from Sydnee Lee.
Daniel Fugiett had four goals to lead the Cheetahs, Alexis Durham and Elizabeth Wendel notched three apiece for the Sharks and Connor Markwell had three for the Sting Rays. Rydr Barger scored the only goal for the Thunder in a 1-0 win over the Twisters.[[In-content Ad]]
